Magnum Handgun Primers In Non-Magnum Reloads?

Hi,
A friend asked me if he is OK using magnum handgun primers in non-magnum caliber reloads (45ACP). I told him it is not advisable, but couldn't give him technical reasons for my opinion. I think it would change the powder ignition rate and chamber pressure? Can anybody offer some facts. Thanks very much.

You did right telling him it would change things. rule of reloading is if you change any of the component's you back off and work up on the powder.

In one of my 9mm's (using Federal Small Pistol and Federal Small Pistol Magnum primers) I simply had to reduce the powder charge by 0.1 grains when using Magnum primers to get the same velocity and recoil characteristics as my Standard primer load.

Case capacity, seating depth and powder your friend is using will all need to be taken into consideration.

Your results may vary......so tell your friend to start low and work his way up.

It's a no brainer when looked at it through common sense.

Tell him the manufacturers have worked out the science through rigorous testing and research, and consulted with legal counsel as to the wording used to describe it.

Telling him that through the words "Magnum", "Standard" or lack thereof, or other nomenclature, they are passing the results on to him.

All he has to do is match the words to the cartridge being used.

No substituting.

The reloading manuals tell you to reduce your load and work up again any time you change any component of your reload.

Whats in a name, the small rifle primers below appear to have been mislabeled, but then again Remington used their primers to light off a lot of Winchester ball powders at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

It also depends on what powder he is using. Some ball powder call for Mag primers.
