magnetospeed vs chronograph

My local gunsmith has both and the Magneto speed reads 60fps faster. Does it make a difference ? Is it that important ? I haven't used either that much, I just purchased a used Magneto speed.

My MS V3 read from 20 fps slower to 0 fps difference compared to my old Shooting Chrony.

Biggest drawback to the MS is that you typically cannot use it on pistols. Biggest advantage: easy setup without calling for a cold range.

Also, consider that a traditional optical chrono is set some distance from the muzzle while the MS is at the muzzle. Some velocity is always lost getting to the regular chrono.

How far is your 1st screen from the muzzle of your rifle. Tests have shown that a 12fps difference is common comparing Ohler readings to Magnetospeed. That is for a screen about 10' from the muzzle. Using ballistic tables the Magnetospeed is quite accurate when calculating drop at various distances.

Your magneto speed should read abut 10-15 fps faster than your optical chrono, a 60 fps diffeence is way high, something is wrong. A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to compare my Oheler 35P to a MS. Here's a copy of my journal. Are you using them at the same time?

My smith has the 2 units in question. When I get time I will take my Magnetospeed to his shop and compare all 3.
