Magneto Speed

I either have or have had almost every kind of chronograph out there and wouldn’t trade my old school Oehler 35p’s for any of them!.. The Garmin’s are great and if I was going to buy a new one that would be the one. I absolutely hated the magnospeed and if I can find it the op could have it as I don’t know him, I for sure wouldn’t give it to a friend!

One site, maybe 24hr. Campfire had some posts detailing how to attach it to your front rest and at5tain good results.

There were issues I had with my multiple Magnetospeed units. I had a hard time getting readings on .20 caliber bullets and a very hard time on small-caliber lead-free bullets and all .17 caliber bullets. Do be aware that the Magnetospeed does not read velocities as high as the Garmin (which I believe is 4,500-5,000 fps?)

I shot my Magnetospeed on many different rifles over many years (from the time they first came out until the Garmin came on the market). On some rifles, I noted no impact change - on others it was just a little bit. I think the thinner your barrel is, the more likely the chrono will alter your bullet impacts.

I see that there is now at least one competitor to the Garmin unit - and if you don't have (or want) to spend the dough on a Garmin, I'd expect to see price reductions down the road or less expensive units that do the same or better. In the meantime, the Magnetospeed is a pretty good unit and you can buy a used on pretty darn cheap now - mostly due to folks switching to the Garmin.

I've seen both outcomes on my own rifles and other people's. I had one load combination for a 7mm F rifle that produced single hole 100 yard groups over a range of charges with the Magnetospeed on, but wouldn't shoot under 0.5-inches or so as soon as I removed it. Conversely, I shot alongside a friend who stopped shooting mid session to put an MS on his 308 Win F/TR rifle, then again to remove it after a few shots, during a practice session on Bisley's 1,000 yard Stickledown Range and continued to shoot Bull-5s and 'V's without changing the sight settings.

Yuuuk!… I forgot about public ranges!…I used one of those once.

I built my own range at the hunting spot once I got suppressors on everything. Recently, I dropped by the public range to shoot with an old friend. It was agony.

Some time ago when I was using my MagnetoSpeed, before I got a mount for it so that it wasn't attached to the barrel, I ran a little test as I was curious to see the effects for the position of the bayonet. Taking my .308 and fired 3 rounds at the dot before mounting the MS to get a base line. Then fired 3 shots starting at the normal mounted position and doing the same after rotating the MS to the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock position.

Apparently, as the bullet left the muzzle, the shockwave was acting on the bayonet, deflecting the bullet. Though I didn't run a test, I imagine how close the bayonet is to the line of flight affects just how much the bullet is being deflected. When I got a mount for the MS so that it's not attached to the barrel, there didn't seem to be as much deflection. Maybe because I wasn't mounting it as close to the line of flight???

These days, now that I've got my Garmin, the MS is put away collecting dust. I keep thinking I just keep the MS as a back up???

Myself and a buddy of mine that I shoot with both use the magneto speed. We really like ours. We have no issues using it on any of our guns. Great accurate reading no matter what the weather or sun conditions. The memory features are nice also. Great product for the money in my (our)opinion.

Absolutely, it’s the only way to go if you can do it. One of my ranges I can go over 960 I think the other one from. 100 yds to 1760yds I use the smaller one usually as it’s where my loading room is, I could go over a mile there as well but would be a pita to set up and maintain the target.

I used a Caldwell chrono when I had no money. I'm sure it wasn't accurate. Half the time the shield would blow off from bullet travel. Then I upgraded to a magneto speed. Thought it was the greatest thing on earth. Then I bought a Garmin. Game changer.
