Magneto speed V's Shooting Chrony at 10'

I tried altering the settings including the sensitivity, and couldnt get my Magneto speed to read on a 1.1" barrel, so I removed the rubber spacer alltogether and tightened the clamp up.......works perfectly, and hasnt failed once. someone else was using a strip of electrical tape between the barrel and the Magnetospeed, but mine is working perfectly with just the plastic "V" shaped frame held firm against the barrel .

I got my V1 to work on an 1-1/8" barrel the same way, by removing the factory rubber pad, and replacing it with a thin rubberized mesh (..cut off a corner of the no-skid pad under the front door rug...shhh).

Ecomeat: The Shooting Chrony 1 that I had was so completely unreliable, that trying to do comparisons with the Magnetospeed was a useless waste of time, ammo & barrel life.

Like comparing a Yugo (remember those?) to a Mercedes.

Or comparing measurements between a Digital Caliper and a Stanley Tape Measure 8)

I now use my Shooting Chrony as a "Book End".

The ONLY THING I trust.....is what appears on the face of the target at whatever distance being shot!!
I think you might be spot on, RMulhern. I had better pay a lot less attention to any data from a conventional Chrony in future.
I will definitely try Flatlanders suggestion re using 22rf Match ammo as a bit of a "baseline" though and do another comparison using both chronys at the same time.
It's very encouraging that it appears that every Magneto Speed user trusts their unit completely and is full of praise

Based upon 60 years of LR shooting and 'besting' lots of great shooters in NRA HP competition I can truly say without any doubt that one of the best test that any shooter can conduct is the LADDER TEST!! A minimum distance of 600 yards as far as I'm concerned is good and when you get a load that will deliver 2" or less at that range.....you're good to go with that load! And CONDUCT THE TEST when the wind is blowing which will give you a true idea of the load performance! Don't worry about horizontal dispersion....just use a tgt size that will hold onto the paper! Low vertical dispersion is what we desire! Once a load that proves acceptable is found.....THEN you can concentrate on reading the wind! A shooter CANNOT shoot good groups or scores UNTIL vertical dispersion is eliminated! This was proven to me when I was 18 years of age by some of the best shooters in the world; the guys I shot with on the USAAMU and USMC Rifle Teams!!

I was testing my old shooting chrony earlier today, before attempting to sell it. I was in the shade of my motorhome and was swinging a cleaning rod over top of the sensors. Got readings from 30 to 70 fps, which got me to thinking. Golfers might be interested in the device. From my old Physics days I recall that 60 MPH is 88 fps. That would make a 120 MPH golf swing equal to 176 fps. All a golfer would have to do would be to place the chrony in the shade and swing the club over the sensors. Then a little math would be needed as golfers want to know their swing speed in MPH. The math is fps multiplied by 3600 then divided by 5280.

With my luck I would probably get more "distance" with the chrony than when I hit a golf ball ::)

Of course, when you shoot your chrony, you're only out the chrony--your rifle isn't touched. Which is more than you could say for your high-dollar driver that you just used to spontaneously disassemble your chrony...

I wonder how accurate either is when tested against sophisticated equipment such as bullet makers and the military use, I'm sure they don't use them to test velocity, we won't the magnetospeed to be more accurate than the normal chronographs because they are so easy to set up, also many of us have thought we should be getting more velocity with a given bullet and powder charge than the normal chronograph shows, the only thing they seem to have in common is extreme spreads, this does not seem to vary to much with either, and to me is more important than speed. dooley (UK)
