Bullet Blow Up?

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
Destroyed my magneto speed today. Here are the details: 6 Dasher, 55 grain Blitzkings, 3639 fps MV, 327,510 RPM's. New chamber job. Fired 3 shots a couple weeks ago cleaning between each shot, to sight in @ 100 yards. This went normal with no hiccups. Today I set up with the magneto speed on to check muzzle velocity and get my ballistic chart figures. I set up @ 200 yards, raised the elevation 3 clicks. My first shot wasn't on paper but I had a reading on the magneto speed. This was a bit puzzling but I proceeded to shot #2. This time there was no new readout on the magneto speed and the shot was still not on paper. Looking at the pickup unit on the magneto speed I discovered it had been hit. I removed it and put a bigger backer behind my target. Shot #3 was on paper about where I expected it to be. I proceeded to shoot it 2 more times @ 200 yards and 2 more @ 250. All of those shots were on target. My initial setup on the magneto speed was as I have done 100 times before. I'm confident it was setup with proper clearance. Being a new chamber job the jacket perhaps was damaged? What do you think about the possibility that the Blitzkings are not designed to stand the 327,510 RPM's? I don't have any other experience with these. One other thing is it was a lot cooler the day I sighted in @ 100 yards. Probably around 85 degrees this morning when I was shooting.

I've never had a problem with a Blitz King in 22 cal but I will be honest and say I have never fired one in 6mm. Anything is possible but usually when a bullet comes apart its generally well past the muzzle. Do you have a pic of the wand on your Magneto? If the bullet is actually coming apart right at the muzzle I would expect some significant damage to the unit not just a strike mark.

Having no idea what the cause of this was , it brought me back to a situation that almost caused a similar result . I mounted my V3 as usual , and got ready to send one . For some reason ; a bell went off in my brain and that , "talking to yourself" message was very LOUD ! YOU DIDN'T CHECK IT ! I removed the round from the chamber and "Flagged it". Got my 12" piece of cleaning rod out , and tried to insert it into the muzzle . It wouldn't go in .....In the process of setting up , I had reversed the two rubber shims , and my sensor arm was nearly halfway up into the bore line of fire . Slapped myself for not being attentive , and corrected the mistake . The unit worked fine , and still does . And now , I check it EVERY time I mount it . I got lucky .....Not saying that is what happened here , but stuff happens .

I sure could have made a mistake but I checked it with the flat stock when I mounted the bayonet. Here is a picture with a cleaning rod inserted.

I would say since the only shots that were not on paper, were the shots where the magneto speed was installed and struck, its likely that it’s related.

Though it is possible, I would be very surprised if it was in pieces coming out of the barrel. The barrel will hold it together. When it exits is when I've seen jacket separation occur and it usually takes more than the length of the of the magneto speed for the jacket to separate. Much more.

I think that you are probably correct. I was having that same thought.

Any chance that the bayonet got sat on or hit something forward and pushed it up into the line of fire.
I don't think so. I put it on in the house but carried it carefully directly to the shooting bench with a Sinclair bipod attached and set it down.

No comment on how bayonet was damaged.

I will say that whenever I use my magneto speed I pull bolt and look down barrel to make sure I'm clear.
You can be sure that I'll take every necessary precaution from here on to make double sure on clearance

In the picture of the gun w/ the MS attached & cleaning rod showing, the cleaning rod is too close to the bayonet. JMO. I keep a short piece (12-14") of wood dowel in the fishing tackle box I keep my MS in and insert the dowel into the muzzle every time I mount the MS to check the clearance before I load a round.
