Mack Bros. action project

This is a project I just finished using a Mack Bros. Gen 1 single shot action. I wanted to try one of their actions as they are made in my home state of South Dakota. It's a 700 clone with a unique indexed .250 recoil lug and a trigger hanger that features a tongue and groove locator on the front of the hanger and a single rear screw to hold it in place. I added an additional center screw to the action. Doing this, the tang was able to be floated...there is no action contact with the stock past the front of the bolt notch.

I went back and forth on a barrel and chambering. With two 22BR's and two 6BR's for 'dog guns, I sure didn't need another of those chamberings. Randy Robinett mentioned that he had a really good 22 Creedmoor 'no turn' reamer with an appropriate free bore length for what we were thinking about doing. Since I had this vintage Hart 14 twist LV Creighton/Pindell barrel here and it bore scoped beautifully, we decided to resurrect the old piece of pipe to see how it would shoot. The 22 Creedmoor is basically a 30 degree 22-250 Ackley Improved. Or a .442 longer 22BR. I like calling it the '22BIB-BR' as for some reason, I can't stand the whole Creedmoor 'thing'. :rolleyes:A road trip to Randy's and the game plan was in place. After his chambering magic, he did a light orbital finish to the barrel that left the original markings in place...a nice nod to the accuracy 'smiths that came before us. Traditional 22 'C-word' guns are really built around longer bullets and faster twist. This one is a step back to see how it performs with a conventional 14 twist and velocities around 3,850-4,000.

Lapua 22-250 brass fire forms beautifully. Plus, there's no 'C'-word head stamps on the cases. :pThank you, Randy!

The stock is a McMillan HBR stock that's a duplicate purple/white pattern of my first real HBR gun. I filled the mag box cut with a chunk of 1.5" square G10 that was profiled to fit. A prebed was done followed by final bedding. There's just a fuzz less than .001 movement when the screws are loosened which proves the 'floating tang' deal works....provided there's enough other surface area, of course. Trigger is a Shilen BR trigger that I rescued from the junk box, resprung and detailed. It breaks nicely at 6 oz. with plenty of sear engagement.

A Sightron 36X is on it for initial load work. Once that's done, I'll plop a Sightron S-Tac 4-20 with the MOA reticle on it for 'dog town duties. The action came with a very nice 20 MOA rail on it. I hate the way a full length rail looks so maybe I'll whittle it down into two pieces. Or maybe push back against the whole 'C-word' thing some more....keep the Davidson bases and let the reticle do the work.

A few pics throughout the project for anyone interested.

Good shootin' -Al

Nice! I like the floated rear tang idea
Thanks. :)

The rear tang on these is extremely beefy compared to a stock 700. If it were a repeater action, the conventional way (using the rear tang and a pillar) would really work well. Since it had the extra bedding surface and I'd always wanted to try this on a 700 style action, it worked out. -Al

I called Mac about Nitriding there action and they didn't recommend it i wonder why.
I like Nitrided actions, I wanna try one of there actions for a varment rifle

I want to try one too. When my 223 gets straightened out I’m going to build a rifle. Just have to decide on a action….. and every other part of it. Thanks for posting

I have several of their actions here. Am also wanting to build on their single shot action. Probably a 22 Creedmoor. Kinda' want to fill gap between my 223 Rem and 6BR. My reamer has 0.080" FB as I don't plan to shoot over 75gr.
What was your impression on the MACK dimensions/tolerances?

The MacBro's action was dead-nutz to the print dimensions - well, as dead-nuts as, via my tools/gauges, I can measure. I didn't check the bolt-fit, or, other stuff: protrusion/fall/etc., as all of that, had met Al's expectations. The lug is a GREAT and well executed concept !
The original chamber was extremely well done - what one would expect from Mr. Pindell!! The new .22Creedmoor chamber (JGS reamer) looks decent, as does the touched-up crown - we're expecting, "good things" - the Hart barrel was/is a LONG way from burned-out. ;) RG

The recoil lug appears to be a dodecagon (12 sided) that would index every 30 degrees. Certainly, interesting but why?

How's it measure up in terms of bolt fit, pin fall, cock on close, etc?
What was your impression on the MACK dimensions/tolerances?
Receiver bolt bore: .700
Bolt diameter: .697
Firing pin protrusion: .050
Firing pin fall: .250
Pin tip diameter: .068
Pin tip hole diameter: .070

The spring shows 23 lbs. The firing pin is very well done. There is no drag between the pin/spring and the bolt inner surface. It certainly has a cock on close 'feel', likely from the short spring with thicker coils. The extractor is well done and stout. On a 700 clone from any mfg, my preference would be for the standard 700 cross pin mounting for the trigger as the hanger takes up room for a larger rear pillar. On this one, the tang is really beefy (thick) so a bigger pillar probably isn't as important as on a standard 700 with a potato chip for a rear tang. You do have to check the trigger fit as the side plates of the trigger can keep the hanger from seating fully. I ended up taking off about .015 from each side plate on this Shilen trigger. But that's no different than any 700 clone with a hanger.

Good shootin' -Al

Al do you have any opinion as to why Mac Bros recommend to not nitride there action? Maybe I should have asked them, just thought it was odd other customs nitride there actions.
