This is a project I just finished using a Mack Bros. Gen 1 single shot action. I wanted to try one of their actions as they are made in my home state of South Dakota. It's a 700 clone with a unique indexed .250 recoil lug and a trigger hanger that features a tongue and groove locator on the front of the hanger and a single rear screw to hold it in place. I added an additional center screw to the action. Doing this, the tang was able to be floated...there is no action contact with the stock past the front of the bolt notch.
I went back and forth on a barrel and chambering. With two 22BR's and two 6BR's for 'dog guns, I sure didn't need another of those chamberings. Randy Robinett mentioned that he had a really good 22 Creedmoor 'no turn' reamer with an appropriate free bore length for what we were thinking about doing. Since I had this vintage Hart 14 twist LV Creighton/Pindell barrel here and it bore scoped beautifully, we decided to resurrect the old piece of pipe to see how it would shoot. The 22 Creedmoor is basically a 30 degree 22-250 Ackley Improved. Or a .442 longer 22BR. I like calling it the '22BIB-BR' as for some reason, I can't stand the whole Creedmoor 'thing'.
A road trip to Randy's and the game plan was in place. After his chambering magic, he did a light orbital finish to the barrel that left the original markings in place...a nice nod to the accuracy 'smiths that came before us. Traditional 22 'C-word' guns are really built around longer bullets and faster twist. This one is a step back to see how it performs with a conventional 14 twist and velocities around 3,850-4,000.
Lapua 22-250 brass fire forms beautifully. Plus, there's no 'C'-word head stamps on the cases.
Thank you, Randy!
The stock is a McMillan HBR stock that's a duplicate purple/white pattern of my first real HBR gun. I filled the mag box cut with a chunk of 1.5" square G10 that was profiled to fit. A prebed was done followed by final bedding. There's just a fuzz less than .001 movement when the screws are loosened which proves the 'floating tang' deal works....provided there's enough other surface area, of course. Trigger is a Shilen BR trigger that I rescued from the junk box, resprung and detailed. It breaks nicely at 6 oz. with plenty of sear engagement.
A Sightron 36X is on it for initial load work. Once that's done, I'll plop a Sightron S-Tac 4-20 with the MOA reticle on it for 'dog town duties. The action came with a very nice 20 MOA rail on it. I hate the way a full length rail looks so maybe I'll whittle it down into two pieces. Or maybe push back against the whole 'C-word' thing some more....keep the Davidson bases and let the reticle do the work.
A few pics throughout the project for anyone interested.
