M1A and the M2 bipod

I am looking for an avenue to return to shooting my M1A in competition after becoming disabled. I believe that if I can attach an M2 bipod, I can at least shoot in F class matches.

My question is, how securely will an M2 bipod attach to an M1A's gas system? Does the M2 bipod have a reputation of working loose under recoil, or is there a way to lock the attaching mechanism?

Thank you for your advice.

They are made for shooting full auto, and to fit every gun no matter the tolerances. Youd be better off getting a sling/bipod adapter and using a more suitable bipod imo

Congratulation on staying in the game and working to overcome the disability.

I have been shooting the M1A since the early 1980s when it was the dominant service rifle in NRA and CMP competition. I watched as the M1A was replaced by the AR version of the service rifle. I am the last man standing shooting the M1A in NRA and CMP High Power Rifle competition. I am telling you all this personal stuff to lend some credibility to my recommendation.

You can have a lot of fun shooting your M1A in F Class and F Class allows a lot of folks with disabilities to stay in the game, that is why F Class originated. I would encourage you to pursue shooting F Class and you will get some good advice on a bipod that will work with your M1A. However, you will find that the M1A lacks the accuracy to be competitive in F Class. That may not matter at first; you may just be able to enjoy continuing in a great sport with a discipline that your disability can accommodate.

You may, however, decide that you would like to be more competitive and that will require a different rifle and cartridge combination. But for now get in the game, shoot some F Class matches and look at what others are shooting in the game. You will have no trouble deciding where to go with this sport and you will find the same great folks in F Class that you enjoyed in the shooting sports in the M1A hay day.

If I can be of any assistance, please contact me at chkunz@bellsouth.net.

Take care,
Clyde
