I remember back in 1966 in a far away place there were some M-14 that were semi-auto. One of the guys in our detachment figured out how to take some carton material, (C-Ration box lid) and insert the cardboard in the trigger area and make the rifle shoot full auto. Very hard to control and the full auto, "feature" would only last for maybe a full clip. We would load the clip with tracers and light up the early evening during weapons check. There was about 100 of us in the compound and it was easy to keep ourselves amused during quiet moments.
