Lyman borescope Dos&Donts

I just bought, this morning a Lyman Borescope on our Daily Bulletin site (less than $200.00 what a deal), I would like input from the people using them, what to do-but mainly what not to do thanks in advance for your help. Carl in Yakima

Don't use it with an oily or wet bore.

I have a Hawkeye and this is how I try to use mine:

- As hogpatrol said, only goes in a dry bore
- Straight in and out, avoid torquing it
- Realize the magnification factor, and don't have a heart attack since everything looks worse.
- I use a Delrin TM guide in the action of Remingtons, think I got it from Brownells
- You will realize that you don't know how you did without it

A Hawkeye and a fiberoptic scope are worlds apart. The Hawkeye is very fragile but has very high resolution that the current batch of fiberoptic borescopes can't match. I have been using a fiber optic borescope (not a Lyman) for about 2 years now. The reason I bought it is it very durable and unless you take to it with a hammer you're not going to damage it. Mine is waterproof. I've even sent it down the kitchen sink drain to see what was causing a blockage, it wouldn't surprise me if that isn't the case with the Lyman.

I find that I can see much better if I use a dark cloth (glove) over the muzzle so that I don't have any backlight. I also keep a 1oz eyedrop bottle filled with alcohol in the box. If I see a fuzzy area on the screen I put a drop on the tip of the fiber optic and use a microfiber cloth and a pencil eraser/q-tip or eyeglass wipes to clean it.

In the next few weeks, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

The Lyman mirror is the part that gets easily damaged . Don't use any old alcohol to clean it , use approved cleaners . Some alcohol has acetone in it and can damage the coating on the mirror .

I got one and used it this morning. I found out my cleaning regimen leaves a lot to be desired. If you don't want to know, don't look. I'm now cleaning all my rifles.

Great tool for what I need and I got it for less than $200 off Amazon.

Hi Ggmac, Can you identify the types of alcohol that contain acetone? Don't believe I've ever seen it listed on Isopropyl containers. ................ Maybe a chemistry major could speak up. Thanks

Might be thinking of nail polish remover which is for the most part acetone. Can't think of an alcohol/acetone mix though.

Ethyl alcohol , from cvs . I started using it cause it reminded me of my home town doctor . Love the smell .
Ethyl and isopropyl are both one the shelf !

Gosh guys , don't you read the ingredients on everything ? Nope me either , I ruined a new set of glasses with the anti glare coating on it , not once but twice till the optician asked what I was using to clean them with . I thought alcohol was alcohol , well live and learn .

I use the heck out of my Lyman. Turn it 360* in the borne all the time with no issues. That way I can easily see the entire bore, not just on part. Often follow a land or grove down the barrel to see if there are carbon changes as you go down the barrel. So far, no issues at all with the operation or mechanics.

Given the extremely high incidence of chronic liver disease in Russia I am not sure you want to make that statement

On a serious note, do not use Methyl Alcohol either due to its ability to be absorbed through intact skin and will cause serious health problems

Do you guys insert the scope rod at the muzzle or the chamber area??

Use a bore guide?

What do you use if insert from the muzzle?

Anybody DIY'd a 3rd hand for getting the darn thing steady so you can see what is showing on the screen?
