Lyman Borescope and 5R/ Regular Rifling

First you are looking at a Krieger bbl. chambered in Dasher with conventional rifling. That is the crown of the barrel.

Next is a Bartlein 5R crown, also another Dasher bbl. I have.

Clearly you can see the Lyman Digital showing the differences in rifling style. Crowns look good and both rifles, one BAT and one Stolle, are competitive with those barrels.

Now this one might stump you. I have to play with the new toy.

Grass??? No. It's the hair in one of my ears. That Lyman Borescope is a functional and fun play-tool.

I was going to guess roots hanging down in a cave like you see in those old black and white horror movies.
I have been pleased with my Lyman. The day I got it, I spent my evening after work, looking at every single rifle I own. It really opened my eyes to how my cleaning was really going. Great product at a really great price. I will add this Lyman Borecam to the list with my Benchsource Annealer that I probably wont be selling anytime soon.

I've only looked through a Hawkeye once, but if memory serves me
I cant see a difference in picture quality w/the Lyman. A side by side could prove
me wrong. With the Lyman I get a good picture, and am ahead about $800. LDS

Agree but with one caveat. Rumor had the original ones delivered early last year as experiencing trouble with the tips of the rod either coming loose or breaking. There was some kind of delay in production or delivery and now they are showing up again.

Have not heard of any failures and hope I do not.

NICE pics Mal! What is your cleaning method and have you made any adjustments to your cleaning routine yet??

On those two I start with BoreTech C-4 and sometimes a plastic brush. No copper but did see a tiny bit of copper past the throat using that Lyman last night. So, like most playing with a borescope, I patched only with Barnes CR-10 and those hints disappeared.

Often after longer shoot strings and cleaning, I use a patch of Iosso followed by a wash with the C4. That C4 does take out the carbon pretty well compared to anything else I have used on barrels using Varget. Now I can be sure by playing with this borescope.

Hunting rifles, especially those that tend to copper and are crude in finish, get lots of other chemicals and brushing. Have not looked at any yet. Bet I am surprised at how dirty and rough those factory barrels are. I have other Kriegers and a Broughton to look at first before I get upset with the factory junk.

CaptainMal,
I can't seem to find any specs on the Lyman borescope. Since you have one can you tell me the resolution of those pictures you posted?

Thanks,

Joe

I was disappointed that it doesn't have battery's, good luck finding power at the range. Bring a long power cord. Other than that its not bad.

Resolution referred to in book is for photos. It reads 320 x 240, whatever that means. Now display resolution says you need VGA 800 x 600 or higher. I don't know what that means either.

Sad reading on 50 year-old Rem 600 in 6 MM. Still shoots well but there's throat fire cracking and bore pitting. Most of the bore is fine except for a few inches in the middle. Pits are in both lands and grooves, although this picture shows only lands. Just more pictures for you to judge if it will work for you. Yes - AC only but a tiny inverter in the truck/car or off a 12V battery would easily work. Only .5 amps draw.

***JoeR ... No email address and I will not send PM as per your instructions. Hope you see this as I only did it for you.

I expect a lot of Hawkeyes being sold . I have a Hawkeye and some digital but nothing ( but Hawkeye ) is that clear , thanks guys , one more scope I want , not need but want

Yep, they stopped all deliveries until corrective actions taken, and THEN they shipped the early ones. The bad lot NEVER left their warehouse and the issue was found before they made the delivery side.

This thread has been a big help in evaluating the Lyman product versus the Hawkeye product(s).
Thanks to all the contributors.

Hawkeye = pure optical

Lyman = digital Pixel quality plenty good enough for the average guy in a very affordable package

Images can look very different in a digital image vs pure optical, glad I have both. The Lyman magnifies more than Hawkeye. Most guys are looking to see if their cleaning techniques work, throat wear, bad lands, cleaning rod wear from using inexpensive rod guide without rod bushings, voids in steel. The lyman will work well for these applications.

The Lyman's ability to transfer data to the computer easily is especially nice, this unit costs in the neighborhood of $1200 for the Hawkeye unit.

For a guy chambering rifles, the bore scope is a very valuable tool.

I have seen some barrels that look horrible shoot very well in varmint and hunting rifles, don't sweat the small stuff. I had one 22/250 barrel that had a void in the steel where there was no lands that still shot tiny groups for a long time.

No doubt that there will be a uptick in barrel maker's returns on barrels that look bad from unsatisfied customers. I just hope that those folks have the good manners to give the barrel maker the opportunity to exchange the barrel before making public posts that may cost a barrel maker thousands in revenue.
