Lube for Bolt Locking Lugs

↑↑
I'm not answering for anyone and I have no idea what Hobo oil is. That said, one would be concerned with the 'shear' factor of a lubricant amongst other properties in the lubricant. Meshing gears (also lugs locking as they cam shut) would have a shear factor to be considered.
Come on man we're talkin about simple locking lugs on a rifle action. Anything more than a really light thin layer of oil and or a simple general grease, is way too over kill. There's no need to try to make rocket science out of it.

Just keep them lightly lubricated as needed and don't let them go dry.

Extreme Pressure, Molybdenum Disulfide with Lithium, N.L.G.I. grade 2, Moly works in between the grains of metal somewhat like oil in a bronze bushing. Basically chassis grease. If them little-bitty roller bearings in a U-joint in a long-nose Pete with a 15 liter engine pushing 1,500 lbs/ft of torque through a 5x4 or 15 speed Eaton can hold out, it should handle the lugs on a rifle bolt. Just my opinion.

When I was in my rich uncle's submarine canoe club, Moly based lubes were called for around the reactor and steam plant.

Machinery's Handbook will tell you more than want to know

Anti-Seize is probably the best choice. Anti-seize with moly is messy if you get it on your fingers. MEC shotgun reloaders have a collet sizer and they recommend anti-seize for the collet lube. The collet with its closing collar has sliding contact which is similar to the rotating bolt lugs on the receiver.

I believe bolt lugs require grease, not oil. Grease tends to stay put better than oil.

I am impressed with ProShot Pro-Gold. I had a Ruger O/U shotgun with a stainless steel receiver. Ruger recommended Pro-Gold for the trunnions. It did a good job.

Years ago I mixed up equal parts never seize, lubriplate, and STP. Couldn't ask for better. Gave a bunch to my buddys and still got 35 years worth.

I like marine type wheel bearing grease - water resistant, pleasant smell, intended for high impact surface coatings, and the nice green color provides some indication that surfaces are still coated. I also use it on the bolt cocking surfaces and on the bolt handle root/receiver surface that initiates bolt opening.

This stuff works just great on gate hinges and general marine equipment use because it is water resistant. Makes real ugly stains on your pants so I use Vaseline on trailer ball hitches. A 14 oz. can used only on bolt lugs should outlast more than a 100 rifle barrels.

To keep your lugs from galling. Call any action mfr and ask what they recommend. Theyre the ones that have to fix the galled lugs and threads. Kelbly even supplies a syringe of it with every action to hopefully keep from having to rework one
I shoot 3 Pandas. 2 of them over 20 years old . Average over 2000 rds a year from each. Never a problem using Mobil One Grease.

i have always used 90 weight gear oil. Always have more than I need. Super sticky, use sparingly. Only took 20 years to get use to the smell.

Greetings,
Maybe I’m a simple guy. 36 yrs in uniform carrying a gun. 30 years LE. I’ve shot high power since 1976, Bullseye pistol, IPSC, etc.
My bolt guns get some of the Lube Kelblys sends. My gas guns get Breakfree. My suppressed gas guns get some more Breakfree. Pistols, they get some Breakfree. That’s from my 1911’s, Glocks and the rest.
Keep your gear clean, lubed and serviceable. I’ve seen AR’s lubed with patrol car engine dipsticks that still ran.
We are not running rocket ships.
John
