lower cost front rest idea

Hello
Wanted to share my diy front rest. I didn't have the money for a seb or Farley. Coaxial for that. Anyway. This is what I'll run this season. My brother has a cnc cutter. But most water jet outfits would do work for a 100 or less. All the plates are tapped and screwed. I found small machine screws on ebay. Just posting to help other folks who are handy that a solid front rest is doable with a bit of time. Don't need to spend a 1k. Could do the same with a welder and plate stock for base. Easier to do the top out of aluminum thought with all the tapping. Just an idea for shooters with more time than money,,

Also, I'm basically a drafter by trade but sketch up is a free download. Build it in 3d. Then draw it 2d and export a DWG for a cutter

Or just use a welder, cutoff saw to make a base. Table saw sim for top.

This is for f class. Only.my second season coming up. Was originally overwhelmed by the equipment needed.

Another option we are making for a friend is taking a cheap front rest and bolting to a 3/4 mdf wide base and adding additional adjustment screws. Hardware store is your friend Rear we are using heavy sand in a cheap rear bag.

Tons of fun, gained a lot of knowledge from this site. This weekend fireforming a 6 Dasher for the first time. Just trying to give ideas for jumping into the game.

My rifle last year was a 260 savage repeater. Was about middle of pack in my group of shooters. Just went with unsorted bergers and lapua brass. And had a ton of fun. My buddy this year is putting together a 6br on a savage varmint to get his feet wet. I'm in hook line and sinker. Have.an unfired 6 Dasher from the folks at kelbley to break in. (Barreled action only, I'm cheap, ended up with a diy stock too) anyway, just saying there are easy and cheap ways to get into the sport,,,,,have about 100 bucks in rest above.minus the Edgewood...and about 20 hours.

Very nice work, looks good and looks to be very functional.

Thaks for the 3D site tip, never heard of it before.

Wow, that looks real nice.

Getting ready to make one for myself, though mine will probably end up looking a lot more ghetto/potlatch than yours. :-\

Thanks guys, got a bunch of pm's on sketch up,,,,,,here is a pic of a savage chassis I mocked up. Color coded for alum size. There are better "mechanical" software programs, but none are free, and easy to use. This would have been a piece of cake to have cut out and assemble, trouble was weight, my rough calcs was 11 pounds, would have put me over for making weight. Ended up with a much more labor intensive stock type, carbon fiber stock, alum channel for bag rider, I'll post a pic of the rig when its finished, still waiting on a couple parts from my brother

$100 plus 20 hours? That sounds very close to $1,000 to me, so money was probably a wash.
However, the knowledge you gained with the project, priceless. Nice job!

Looks great! By my math it's $100 plus free time of 20 hours. How would that 20 hours be spent otherwise? If you have the 'free' time this cost you $100 + knowledge gained + a fabulous rest = a home run. Fine job indeed.

Let's see here , 900 ÷ 20 = $45 per hour of savings. Well worth it!!!

I see the point here, time is not free.

But how many folks can bill for time spent reloading, hunting, fishing??? It's called free time for a reason.

I can't, have to be in the office to do that. Maybe if I was self-employed...

Truth is I have very little out of pocket dollars in it,,, and not a real 1000 bucks.

That's a really sweet rest AkShooter. I have been making one out of cherry wood but it's nothing close to as nice as that one.

I am teaching myself some CAD maybe I can draw one up and have one made in aluminum. This forum is really challenged me positively.

So, you're saying I should get paid $175 every time I have sex?

I'll let you tell my wife that...

If $100 + 20 hrs = $1000 then 20 hrs = $900 and 1 hr = $45 ... right?

You're right and I was wrong...I should only be charging her $135 for sex.
