Love reloading for junkers

Little confused here. I know you can have either .223 or .224 dia bullets for the hornet but these are .224 dia like all the other bullets I use in my .223/5.56's ,maybe I'm missing something?

I looked at the box and totally assumed the diameter was .223.
My mistake.

However, the 50 and 55gr Hornadys seem to shoot in pretty much anything.

Before this component mess, I was always of the opinion that I could get just about any rifle to shoot at least 1 moa with proper bedding, tailored reloads, aftermarket stocks, trigger jobs or replacement etc. In a few cases, the barrel was just not good and had to be replaced.

It was fun but can easily turn into the money rabbit hole once you start chasing this goal.

However, with few exceptions, I got almost all of them to shoot well and that was satisfying.

I used to fiddle around with junkers quite a bit too. They're fun and you can learn a lot but after awhile came to the same conclusion that they're mostly a money pit. For the amount of money I used to throw at all the "cheap" stuff I could've been buying nice high end stuff that actually shot well from the get go :D

Yea, if I had it all to do over again and was younger, I would just have 3 custom rifles built with the barrel, twist, stock, trigger, action, etc. I wanted and equip them with same brand, reticle, high quality scope, such as a Leupold VX 3, 4 - 14X with adjustable objectives and be done with it. In the long run I would have saved a ton of money and have a better and more consistent platform to meet all my shooting needs.

Having three rifles with same trigger, pistol grips and scopes, etc.; I could easily switch from one to the other without any learning curve to re-familiarize myself to the rifle. Consistency is the name of the game if you are only interested in precise shooting and performance, not experimentation.

Unfortunately, I had to learn these things but now it's too late to start over, so I'll just wade through with my current stuff, 4 or 5 different brands of rifles and scopes and stocks, etc. They get the job done but I'm convinced that I could shoot better if I had better equipment consistency from rifle to rifle.

FUN! :D:D

I have a 6.5x55 model 96 I got for $125, it now prints about 1 1/4" at 100 yards, put a trigger, new safety, synthetic stock on and mounted a scope.

I got an 8MM Mauser I got for $85 it was already sporterized with the barrel cut to 21", aperture sights, mag follower milled and a Timney trigger. I bought it to replace the barrel, but left the old one on as it shot well. I made it my scout rifle. I liked it so much I found one for my son, that one cost me $225 when done. I bought six 70 round bandoliers of 174 grain surplus for $4 a piece, then a couple years ago 500 rounds of 150 something grain surplus for $80. I hand load 190 grain for field work.

I have three 03's two Remingtons and one Springfield, one 03A3 Smith Carona and a Remington model 17. All for under $100 each.

I also have a few custom rifles but they're such good machines that anyone can make them hit. I have found that as long as the barrels are reasonable that 99% of the problems are stock bedding.

My 8MM has a broach cut barrel that's rough as hell, I lapped it and it improved the cleaning, it shoots extremely well. I thought Jeff Coopers idea of a forward mounted scope used for spotting as bogus, (pointing a rifle at something just to put a lens on it makes my skin crawl) so I use aperture sights and field glasses.
