Love for the 308

Got this years hunting season covered. Over the years, I have had gun project after gun project. I’ve tried everything from 7.82 Warbird, 300 Weatherby, 7 MAG, 6.5 Creedmoor, Sherman 6.5 SST and on and on. Years ago, I stated out with the plain vanilla 308 WIN. Talk about the circle of life. I have hit the easy button and I really don’t see myself wanting for more!
I absolutely LOVE both of these rifles. The Borden Mountaineer basesd bolt gun is super accurate and makes 1st round hits on 6” plates out to 400 yards. The Socom is my pig gun. Up close and personal lead slinger. The SRO is always “ right there”. No effort. Just point and pull the trigger.

I too started out with a .308 and have done some migrating myself but along a bit of a different path. I have a switch barrel Savage and have barrels chambered in .243, .260, 7mm-08, .308 and .358. At some point I'll probably chamber a .338 just to have the entire family. I learned about case reforming with this cartridge but as I have so many from the .308 family now I stick to cases with the correct headstamp to avoid confusion. It's been a lot of fun and continues to be.

Gotta love the 308, a lot of folks hate it...and everything is compared to it ...and all the calibers are better than the 308...of coarse.
But I had 8 had to give up one to a family member who didn't own one. I have 4 times the 308s than any other caliber. In autos and bolts 18, 22, 26, 27 30 in barrels twists rates 12, 10, 9, & 8. Some are customize and highly altered, long action and short action for specific reasons and tasks. A 5 gallon bucket of recycled 308 brass, 2000 new LC brass 2/3 already been shot and many hundreds of Lapua small and large primer cases. For fun and more serious shooting I choose a 308, the majority of the time accurate with subs, or long shots with 200 grs .715 BC
SMK at 2850 fps, 225gr ELD-M 2675 fps or 230gr Atip at 2620 fps in a long action & chasis. The 308 is no dog with over 3600 ft/lbs of muzzle energy available out of this case...if ya want, as new powders and high BC bullets have become available. But not needed to really enjoy this old cartridge, even with cheap brass and 2nds bullets, surplus powder, you can have a bunch of fun...and be fairly accurate with crap components. I actually shot a .3" and .4" 5 shot groups back to back with an AR10 18" proof barrel with 20 yr old 748 powder needed to get rid of, MILITARY LC primed cases, and a 15 cent bullet...loaded in a Dillon progressive & thrown in a labeled plastic freezer bag as a container. They shot great....enjoy the 308, it's still good and better than ever if ya choose to go for performance.

I hear ya Ray 123. That’s kinda how my decision was made. I was straightening out my reloading room and I KEPT finding 308 brass, box after box of 308 bullets. This year, I have loaded up some 125 grain Nosler Accubonds. Shoots fast and flat and is easy on my shoulder.
BTW guys. Thanks for all the comments.

Good choice no doubt. The 125 gr. Accu-bond is a great hunting bullet. It is fast and flat out to 400 yds. and kills DRT with good shot placement.

I loaded up some mistakenly bought 135 smk's with 2495 in a 10T they shoot ok, I'm dealing with a 20 in barrel X cal it's the 1st 308 I cannot get to shoot bugholes, any help....I also have 178 amax I'm shooting, I did cut a hole today but it wasn't a 2 bullet hole more like 4 bullet plus1 in the hole, it's the best I got so far, gettin ready to screw it off and shoot something else...I do need some expertise on the matter help would be great

Sometime ya just gotta tomatoe stake it, and start over. Only you can tell when that time
comes however...
think I will go to a 155 or so bullet to try, the 178's just shot great in everything I had... my brother shot a 5 shot group at 500 at .861 with them but it's time for new pills
