I am thinking about trading for a Lothar walther barrel. A good friend of mine told me they were junk barrels. Whats the scoop? I always thought they were a top barrel maker? I read another post were someone said they are hammer forged. I dont think i want a hammer forged barrel. Are these good barrels or just average at best?? Thanks Lee

1) Your good friend doesn't know what he's talking about.
2) They're button rifled
3) Do a search. On this board there's page after page about Walther barrels.
4) Nothing wrong with hammerforged......Sako/Tikka plus many other European barrels are made that way.

I did a search but didnt find much! I read on here were someone suggested that they were hammer forged. How come you dont see them in the benchrest equipment list? I always thought they were supposed to be a good barrel???? Lee

LOL,,, Its kind of like use at your own risk..I think your friend is saving you much time and trouble..Sounds like a damn good guy.;)

This isn't difficult.

The above is the result out of a 27 inch LW barrel,.260 Rem) with over 2700 rounds through it. This was in winds gusting to 30 mph, and all the group sizes are edge to edge.

LW barrels are all button rifled and generally shoot well.
I will be rebarreling the rifle as soon as I run out of my current stock of ammo, with another LW barrel in 6MM BR.

Are they the very best barrels available in the market, probably not. But are hard to beat on price vs performance.

You might want to check other forums as to usage of L-W barrels. I remember when Blackstar was the buzzword and that L-W barrels were used. Try this site:

I have a 30-284 with a Walther 26in. Polygonal barrel and couldn't be happier with it. With 185Berger BTs it will do 3/8 MOA consistantly at 400yds. IF I do my part that is. It's a hunting rifle not a BR rig.

skeetlee: As with most subjects, it's difficult to make a blanket statement, like your friends about hammer-forged barrels), and condemn them all in one sweep. One of my most accurate barrels is a Tikka in 308: consistant sub- MOA with 5 shot groups, and one of the easiest barrels I have, big name makers included) to clean. Scoped the bore with my Hawkeye and it is truly a work of art. Precision Shooting recently had an article detailing the results of sample hammer-forged barrels that are being made with their newly acquired machinery at the Ruger factory. These barrel blanks were made intended for the Mini 14, were fitted to AR platforms and accuracy tested. Results left little to be desired. One of the drawbacks to hammer-forged barrels is the very high cost of the machinery required, well over One Million per, so the 'smaller' barrel makers just cannot afford that initial cost outlay. Like anything else, if properly done, hammer-forged barrels can be every bit as good as those made by another other method.:)

If my memory serves me right, I believe Lother barrels were known to give Gunsmiths fits in regards to machinability.

I guess when i think of hammer forged barrel, i think of Remington. I have had a couple Remington barrels that shot really well, but getting the copper out of them was a nightmare!!!! Thanks for all the info guys. I dont think my smith is real crazy about using our new reamer on the barrel so i will look for something else.
Ackman, I didnt see that many responses to my search. Maybe i typed it in wrong. What ever the case may be, no need to be difficult with the peole here. I have read a lot of post were you give people a hard time. there is no need for it!! we like to talk about rifles and barrel and ammo and what ever else rifle related, so how about letting us do that?? Thanks guys!! Lee

Skeetlee, I appreciate your advice and will take it to heart. I'll offer some to you......when you ask a question on here don't argue with people when they answer, as you did on another board. Also there's no need to ask the same question over and over....but if you start doing that here and people get short with you, don't do a meltdown as happened several times on another board. But if/when that does happen, don't be sending out ugly profane pm's. This advice is given in the spirit of wanting everyone to just get along, as Rodney King would say.

thanks keith! Havent talked with you in a while. I will send you a e-mail sometime this weekend. I have been comming up with a bunch of different ideas lately. I will fill you in!! Hope all is well! Lee

I am using a L-W barrel in one of my prone rifles, standard UIT) and a Border cut rifled barrel in my free rifle, both ISSF rules)I test both for accuracy at 100 meters before doing the same at 300 meters and can't tell the difference in grouping between the two. I think it will take a highly sofisticated bench rig to find any differences between the two. Maybe, just) on average a Border or Krieger barrel has a little advantage over a L-W,strictly benchrest) but quite a few top shooters in Europe use L-W barrels and I haven't heard any complaints yet.

I read the same question on the hide, maybe same person asking....Anyway, L-W makes barrels for alot of wholesale customers who in turn sell them as their own brand. A small mom & pop company selling their own brand of barrel sometimes get their blanks from L-W. I personally have never had an issue with them from machining to barrel life to accuracy. YMMV

I bought a LW prefit and in talking with their rep he did address that many smiths had maintainability issues and i want to say the recomendation was faster speeds and high sulfurized cutting oil. If you call and ask they will point blank telly you what you should do different to optimally machine their blanks, they even have a school listed on their website.
