Lost somewhere along the line

Is it the so so packaging or because of the over abundance of options ? How come I haven't heard of " Remington 40 X bore cleaner" until recently? I've seen what it does …...it cleans bores !

"Remington 40 X bore cleaner" until recently? I've seen what it does …...it cleans bores"

Pretty sure it used to be called Rem-Clean.

In the mid 90's when I was seriously shooting NRA High Power, Boots Obermeyer told me how to clean his barrels (which i was using):

"Push a couple clean patches through the bore (breach to muzzle) to get rid of the junk, then wrap a patch around a worn out brush and saturate it with "RemClean", stroke it back and forth 10 times, push a couple clean patches through it and you are done. Periodically use some Sweet for the copper fowling."

I used that method for years and it worked fine - but then again I didn't have a bore scope either, so maybe it wasn't so fine ;). Things have changed a lot 25 years. While I think RemClean/40X Bore Cleaner still works great, when you want an abrasive, today I prefer Boretech "Eliminator" and periodically some JB, or 40X Bore Cleaner.

Not saying I am doing it right, just my experience.

I use it along with JB on factory barrels shooting cast. The directions on the 40X are pretty clear. Wet the bore with Rem oil, then I wrap a plastic brush with Viva brand kitchen towel(strips) so it's a pretty snug fit, then scrub the barrel w/40X. Was going to say aggressive swabbing, but not really. More of a don't give a crap.... then mop it out with Ed's red. Dry mop till it's squeaky.

JB when they're brandy new during fireforming or if there's some antimony wash or the thing is gravel road rough. The 40X is used more after "break in"(which really ain't but, gotta call scrubbing a new barrel something). I like it when making major changes during load workups. Like a change in powder. Or,even though this is a rarity these days,if there was a lube change.

Bronze brushes wrapped with real bronze wool, dripping wet with Ed's red is another factory barrel cleanout that gets used early on in a barrels life,or transitioning from jacketed by previous owner.... to cast.

Since my load workups are right out the back door,Ed's red while barrel is warm is the normal M.O., all the stuff above is more aggressive.

I used to use Rem Bore Cleaner a lot. Never had any issues with it but it's critical to get all of it out of the bore, chamber, and lug area. Because it is drippy it can take some time to clean it all out.

JB and Iosso are far superior since they are a paste and much easier to clean out. It doesn't take much scrubbing either, which is readily seen with a bore scope.
