Losing interest in my 17HMR ...

I shoot them both 17HMR-22Mag. @.25cents a shot for the 17HMR the .15 cents a shot for the 22 mag. The 22 mag gets alot more use and I believe the 22mag hits better than the 17HMR.Tested at 150yds.and at 100 yds. 4 yote carcasses were used.@150 the 17HMR didn't penetrate the skull,But left a NASTY SCALP JOB),The body shot had 3.75 inches of penetration. The skull shot 22 mag penetrated and was found on the off side,The body shot had 6 inches of penetration.@100 yds the 17HMR Penetrated the skull and lots of fragmentation,The body shot had 6 inches with good fragmentation. The 22 mag exited the skull, the body shot was found on the off side just under the hide.Just my tests anyway.,These were trapped yotes within the last 36 hrs.before tests)

CJ were you using 17gr or 20gr bullets in the 17 HMR when you did your penetration tests?

In very unscientific tests, I have foung that the 20gr XTP far outperforms the 17 grainers for penetration.

The cost factor of 17 or 22mag doesn't really matter to me. Rimfire is still considerably cheaper than centerfire.

To me the main difference is the fact that the 17 is so much more accurate from 100yds and farther. I have had 3, 22 mags and none were very accurate beyond 50yds.

In the 4 years since getting my Savage 9317 my 22 mag has not been out of the gunsafe once.

They were the 17gr vmaxs. The rifles are both Ansch. and shoot very close to each other 3/8-1/2 for either at 100.Don't get me wrong the 17 HMR is ok I just don't see it as the wonder pill as most do is all.If I plan on shooting farther than 150 then it's .18 cents a piece for loading my 22-250 .02 primer,.05 bul. .11 powder and time.Being on a Shooting, BUDGET )I need to do what I can to maximize the Bang for the Buck and performance A mdl.96 17 Ruger of mine was sold a couple months back, going towards a 6.5 IHMSA rifle project

Scott7M, what rifle/ammo did you shoot the 1/4 moa group with? I apparently bucked the trend and bought a Marlin 917VS in what they call a carbon fiber stock. Got 2 boxes of Hornady 17gr V-max to try. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I was surprised to see 6 groove rifling instead of the microgroove.

Good shooting, Tom

Correction: The barrel not only isn't a microgroove, it isn't a 6 groove either. It's a 4 groove. Had to use the borescope to count the lands and grooves. Man that's a little hole! The Hawkeye slim tube will not go in the muzzle, but will go in the chamber and throat. Probably doesn't matter either way, but it bothered me that I was guessing.

Scott, let us know what you're shooting.

Tom

I'm pretty pleased with the little CZ! It was purchased as a present for my son - haven't given it to him yet, but I strongly suspect he'll be pleased with the way it shoots!

I have 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 Fireball and 17 Remington rifles. Most of my shooting with the 17s is at prairie dogs. For Yots I will not use my WMR 22 rimfire rifle but I ll use a larger center fire rifle. I reload ammo for my centerfire rifles to save some money but at times like shooting prairie dog pups I ll use the 17 HM2 and 17 HMR rifles and pay the price.

Well, get ready for the 5mm to be re-introduced soon. And if it is brought out in a heavy barrel/<1moa it will easily eclipse the .17hmr all the way out to 200yds. So save your pocket change and stand by! Steve-share your sport

There is some data on the Remington 5 MM rimfire round at www.aguilaammo.com It is not loaded with a 38 Gr bullet with a 2,100 ft/sec muzzle velocity like the old Remington ammo, it is something less. The 5 MM ammo imported by Centurion Ordnance is a 30 Gr bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2,300 ft/sec.

What kind of accuracy are you seeing? My brother has the same marlin and its not accurate like my savage. The one thing I notice on his gun is the trigger, so that would be my first modification. I would bet that with a good trigger the two guns would be relatively equal. I know you said other than a trigger but that is probably the most important and relatively inexpensive as well.

that may be the case. at about 50yds i put 5 in a quarter
sized hole but that was with only a front rest. maybe it
is just me or the absence of a steady rest. i will try
that before i get the trigger, becuase the trigger to
me feels fine but i have never shot a gun with anything other
than a factory trigger.
