So yesterday was my day ! So to quickly recap I was not confident about taking my R700 varmint out to 1K as I could not find an accurate 175gr load with the necessary velocities up around 2675 fps. My R700 has a slower 1-12" twist which favors 155's and 168's. So I moved in the direction of my .300WM , and found an awesome load using the 208 Amax and 74.9 gr of H1000 which was getting me about 2740 fps. Perfectly capable out to 1K . In hindsight I'm glad I chose this direction. Some of the students shooting .308 were experiencing transonic instability at 1K. As for the class I had a BLAST and came away with a great introduction to methods for compensating spin drift , humidity , and atmospheric pressure into your dopes. Our instructor had deep military long range shooting knowledge to share , and he was a tool ! During live fire You got barked at (negative) for a missed shot , you got barked at (praised) for a hit. Great sense of humor as well. Loved the instructor ! He also showed me a "mechanical deficiency" with my hold. As I progress through my string I was introducing excessive cant into my hold. I never realized this. He suggested a scope level to verify cross hair perpendicularity consistency from shot to shot. My .300WM performed excellent, and when it came down to ringing the gongs at 1K the .300 heavy hitter shined. The polymer tipped Amaxes leave an awesome "splat" on a freshly painted gong. I was actually able to spot my own shots at 1K with my Sightron SIII 8-32 scope at full power (and I have piss poor eyesight). Here's a few pics, the small black spec way at the end is the 48X48" gong at 1K
