Looking to buy a unicorn .....

I'm looking for a used benchrest style stock for a S&W or Howa 1500 (short action) rifle. Stock doesn't have to be beautiful, just functional. If someone has a stock that will work, please let me know.

Check Richards Microfit stocks. They offer a Howa 1500 short action in a benchrest style. If you are not familiar, they do 96% fitted stocks that you finish. I have done 2 of them now and they have come out pretty nice. The prices are pretty reasonable too.

I read that some buyers of Microfit stocks were not satisfied with the quality or delivery time. Granted this was a couple of years ago but how are they currently? Does anyone have any current experience dealing with them ... quality and delivery time?

try googling richards microfit stocks reviews. You will come up with more information than limiting your query to this one site.

I waited 2 years for Lothar Walther to cut me 2 6.5 Grendel barrels. still the best shooting 6.5 Grendel I’ve ever shot!! At the end it was worth the wait but I would have argued all day while I was waiting for it!!!

If looks are not a prerequisite, you can remold most any stock to fit your action.
This Robertson, that I bought at the Shilen Swap Meet years ago, has had a Bat M, a Bat Neuvo, , and now a Farley Drop Port molded into it.

You can see all of the different holes that accomadeted the bolts for the different actions.

Very true, particularly fiberglass stocks. Once you cut & fill, then bed, the paint will make it all look alike. I have done the same with wood (except no paint) and of course doesn't look as good. I recently made a very early Shilen (round action, 2 digit serial number) fit a Rem. 40X stock (no stocks available for this action). Had to add several pieces around and behind the tang, but after staining it dark it not only works, but doesn't look bad -- not much different than a laminated stock.
