Looking for Sightron S-Tac replacement

I'm thinking of swapping scopes on my Howa. Currently, it has a Sightron S-Tac 4-20x50 with an MOA-2 reticle. I like it, but I wouldn't mind a little more magnification and I'd like to swap to Mils. For those that have had experience with a S-Tac, what's a good replacement that would compare with glass in the Sightron and be $700 or less?

Are you wanting to switch to first focal plane too?

The Arken EPL4 6-24x50 is a good one at a great price. FFP only, I wish they made it in SFP

Hawke Sidewinder if you can live with the reticle. I got use to it but put it on my wife's air rifle, she beats me with it. I have another one on the way. Why FFP?

You might wanna check out the Arken offerings
The EP-5 glass is a step above the SH4
and there is a scope called "The One" made in the same facility/by the same company (something like that)
with finer hash marks
0.2 Mil vs 0.5
If it were me, I like more subtensions in my reticle because it allows finer measuring (using your scope as a rangefinder) at long distances.
with 0.2 mil subtensions you can define 3.6 inches easy at 1000 yards.
If your eyes are good you can then again split that in half and see between the hashmarks to define 1.8 inches at 1000.
Then---------when you miss------you know how far you missed by ;)
Here's a link

Honestly, I just want to give one a try. The scope I want for my next rifle is a FFP and I wanted to try one out at a lower price point before I spend a lot more for something only to find out that I really didn't want it. If I don't like it, I feel like it would be easier to get rid of than a SFP. That's the way I've been looking at it.

Analysis paralysis. That's the state I'm in right now. Give someone that's cheap & not good at making decisions access to the Internet and it's easy to get that way (at least for me).

So, I've been studying this way longer than I should have. I've seen where I can get a new Burris XTRII for $550. The link that Kracken McGraw posted will get me in a PST Gen II for $680 and honestly, they seem to be the go to for this price range. But for some reason, I keep getting drawn back to Athlon. Well, one reason is their reticles. I'd still be in that same price range with an Athlon...$500 - $700. All of the side by side comparison videos that I've watched, they look as good or better than some of the others they've been compared to. And when I say Athlon, I'm talking about the Midas Tac HD (5-25 Gen 1 or 6-24 Gen II) and the Ares Etr (3-18).

I keep trying to decide on magnification also. This is no different than building a hot rod. Haha... Trying to be honest with yourself on what you need vs what you (think) you want. There's places around me that would allow long shots. The chances of me ever being there are slim to none. The ranges I have access to are 600 yards.

Maybe I'm wrong (there a good chance of it), but I feel that the optical quality would be better on the lower powered Ares with the UHD glass vs the higher powered HD glass. I like the clarity of my SIII that I have on another rifle and the S-TAC is pretty good too up to about 18x and then it starts getting a little hazy. I don't know if the Athlon will beat it, but I've about talked myself into buying one and seeing if it will.

You could order one from a vendor who has easy return/refund policies to check it out.

You would need to be careful not to add any marks.

I still think you would enjoy the 6-24 or 5-25 over the 3-18 power range.

Eurooptic had some good prices on some athlons. I have a midas btr gen 2 and its really good for the money. The midas tac’s are similar without illumination and FFP I believe

Honestly, I'd hit the secondary market if I were you. You say you like your SIII, I just picked up a Sightron 10-50 for $750 delivered, used. I have a few of their 8-32 and love them. Haven't paid over $800 for one yet. If I don't like it, its still worth exactly what I paid. Of course, warranty and customer service reputation are key when buying used.

I'll definitely be looking for a used one first. Good deals are out there, you just have to jump on them when they come along. Like you said, as long as the warranty is good, I'm perfectly fine with it. My SIII was bought used as well.
