Looking for information, load data and experience with 6.5Gap 4s/6.5 x 300SAUM

Odie,

Heres some initial testing I did yesterday on my 6.5mm SAUM, using H1000. I'm shooting Hornady 143gr ELD-X projectiles in Norma 300 SAUM brass.

64gr was the Rifles max load, i'm probably going to work at the 62.0 - 62.5 gr. I have Superperformance which is the next powder I'm going to try.

Regards,

Michael.

Has anyone tried the IMR 7828 SSC with the 140's. I should have mine put together in a couple of weeks. Got a couple jugs of 7828 laying around might start out with. Looks promising on QL.

Boiler,

I'd be interested in the QL data on 7828. I'm also interested in what QL has to say about the use of Superperformance?

Regards,

Michael.

  1. This is the completed 6.5 Gap 4s.
  2. Action is a Rem 40x Br stock is an old 40x with tuner screws I refinished and barrle is a K&p 1 in 8 29 7/8 Rem sendero contour. Scope is a Burris xtr II 5.5 x 25 scr MOA Ken Farell rings an 20 moa bace. I have shot some test load that are showing VERY good promise H1000 140 vld hybrid on Norma 300 SAUM cases

I can not get another picture to load. Keeps telling me that the file is too large.

Odie,

The bolt is a little much for me, but I must say that I love this rifle.

The simplicity of using the 40X stock just does something, 2 thumbs up, great job.;)

The 6.5mm SAUM Norma cases weigh on average 242.8 grains and water capacity measured to the case mouth is 68.4 grs h2o.

Now that I've measured capacity of fire formed brass in my chamber, capacity has increased to 72.8grs.

There was a single box of Remington factory 150gr 7mm RSAUM sitting on a gunshops shelf which I snapped up yesterday as I am keen to see the case capacity after firing in my rifles chamber. I just pulled the 150gr Corelokt projectiles, resized the cases and reused the powder (looks like maybe they used Reloader 19?) Befores seating a new Hornady 140gr SST.

Interesting to note the first round I pulled, powder weighed 60.5gr but the next 4-5 were all another 2 - 3 grains heavier and quite randomly all over the place. I just tipped the powder into a used container and loaded up with 60.0 grs which will be fine as a load to fire form this Remington brass.

Those old 40X stocks are an overlooked gem. I love em and for $65 at Numrich, who can pass em up?

Just got a 6.5 Saum reamer in from JGS for a sheep rifle build. 140 vld at 2.950". Quickload shows a max load of about 60 grains of 7828ssc and 3218 fps in a 28" or 3104" in a 24".

Man, that 7828 does look good on QL for the 6.5SAUM!

Mine is chambered in the updated "4s" reamer. GAP revised their original reamer design, but shortened to .081" to better handle lighter weight bullets. My .081" FB chamber puts a 140 JLK in the lands @ 2.935"-ish, and 130VLD @ 2.870-ish. Both feed beautifully from AICS magazines...

Going any longer in freebore kinda prices one out of shooting any of the lighter weight bullets without quite a bit of jump. If >/=140gr are all you'll shoot, then the longer freebore might be desirable. Be prepared, you might encounter feeding limitations from a standard Rem700SA footprint setup, if you wanna load to lands...

This reamer was made to a dummy round with a 140 vld at 2.950". A wyatts box mag is 2.995". Its for an ultralight that a customer wants to take to Ak on a sheep hunt. I think I will have to build my self one too ;)

Love to see it when it`s done.....:)

I've had Wyatt's SA 2.995" mag box in both a 7WSM and tried it in the 6.5SAUM, too. Pretty much, the longest you'll be able to feed realistically is 2.975" from that box.

More importantly, at that length, the action's feed ramp becomes the limiting factor. When seated much past 2.950", the bullet tip will actually hit the bottom of the ramp and cluster-F the whole enchilada. That's why Surgeon notches the feed ramp in their 591 SA, like this:

And here's a pic of a modded Stiller, note the feed ramp milled to clear the bullet tip @ long c.o.a.l.

If you've got that covered already, then disregard. If not, I'd re-think that long throat, as the .081FB "GAP 4s" reamer sits a bullet where it does not require modding the action's feed ramp in such fashion. My 6.5SAUM is a R700SA and @ 2.935", a 140JLK clears the ramp & feeds fine. From both a Wyatt's MBE-5/BDL config, and a Surgeon DBM w/ Accurate AICS WSM mags. Additionally, there's another 15-20thou. room to spare, for chasing the lands later in Life...

It ain't my $$$, just sharing some info for those considering a 6.5SAUM for themselves. That cartridge will make a heckuva sheep gun, no doubt!

How far off the lands were these loads?

Hog,

Scrub the info on the H1000, just couldn't get it to give me the tight groups I was after.

A couple of guys here in New Zealand recommended I try Retumbo, so I loaded up a series of 3 rounds starting off at 62.0grs and working up to 63.0grs, in 0.2gr increments. Best group was 62.5grs, with bullets sitting 0.35 off lands.

As I was loading out at the range, I then took that load and seated bullets a little closer to lands at 0.20 and fired another 3 shot group...Bingo, the group measures 0.462 MOA.

I'm not loading Superformance either, too fast a powder so I have been informed.
