Looking for anyone who has used IMR4227 in a 45-70

If you have ever used this I would like to find out your results. I'm not looking to try another powder or use something else instead. I have been using IMR 3031. I was at a shop in Calgary and they had 4227 on sale. Looked at the load book they had on the counter. The 4227 was listed in several places for a 45-70 load. I have found an older Lee book but not much in recent publications since I got home.

Thanks

I have used it with marginal results, but then again the rifle was marginal, original Trapdoor. I wanted a light bullet, reduced load and it fit that role well.

Lyman has data for cast loads, many bullet manufacturers do also. Generally it’s with bullets of 350 grains or less. Make sure you check both strong and weak action sections, sometimes it only shows up in one or the other.

That is a little on the fast side. It'll work but you're gonna get to high pressure before you get to good velocity. I personally use H322 and even that can be improved upon for top performance. My friend (I don't hunt myself but have a place to) used my Marlin 1885 in 45-70 once and tore the whole front half off of the deer 58gr of 322 w/ a 300 gr Remington bullet and really that isn't really hot.

Didn't want to get into other powders since you asked specifically about IMR4227, but I agree with the other posters that H322, IMR3031 and, in some instances, AA2200 for modern rifles are far and away better choices.
