Looking for advice on cleaning bolt rifle

Y
When are gun cleaning threads going to be treated like political content, and treated accordingly?

Don’t get me wrong, I personally love both. Always beneficial to see where everyone stands. Keeping the fingers on the ol pulse.

Cleaning is akin to “who’s the prettiest girl”, or “best way to cook a steak”. “Ford vs Chevy”.
You have no idea how many people don't realize how often they should actually clean.
its not Ford Vs Chevy, its more like some people want to stick to their Yugo and dont realize why they need to step it up a notch

Yeah people tend to make this difficult or don't have enough common sense to get a good grasp on barrel cleaning.

Bore guide.
Carbon or coated cleaning rod
Bronze brushes.skip nylon they are about useless
Two wet patches of oil.kroil, free all..prefer free all
Brush ten times and repeat until patches are fairly clean...
Then switch to copper removal bore tech copper remover or hoppes foaming bore cleaner(formerly gunslick hoppes bought out) are fastest two in currently using then wet two patches and repeat with bronze brush 10 times.keep repeating until patches are clean.the hoppes foaming bore cleaner requires much less brushing.keep repeating until happy.

May have to return to penetrating oil(freeall kroil) then back to copper remover for layered build up.

Use bore scope to determine if abrasive is needed.

My days of spending weeks in the basement cleaning with shooters choice or butches are over I hope.lol
I still like ammonia based cleaners at the range for barrel break ins just cause i can read what barrel is telling me better with those I been using forever.lol

I believe it was Erik Cortina in one of his early videos years ago that said, "I can't keep my barrel consistently dirty, but I can keep it consistently clean."

To that end, I have the habit of a full clean to bare metal after (more like right before next) every shooting session, I always clean with Thorroclean abrasives. However, I have experimented with how long I can go without and maintain accuracy at 1000y. For my gun and load, that answer is well over 200 rounds, like in a multi-day F/class match. In fact, as round count on my barrel gets over 1300, it takes longer to settle back in from clean than if I didn't scrub at all.

So in addition to products being used, ask yourself if you are one to clean always every time, right after shooting, or do you hate cleaning and put it off.

I think it’s the Pro Shot micro polished rods. Never tried them.
I love the PRO SHOT rods, I have tried all the others and got rid of them. I use them on 32" barrels with no problem, the handle diameter is real small compared to everyone else's. A good bore guide and your good to go.

… great bench rest rifle cleaning visual…
You could do a lot worse than to emulate Speedy.

I keep a spray can of wipe out in my range bag and put a few shots of that down the barrel of any CF gun immediately after shooting then do a deep cleaning when I get home.

Keep in mind you will receive and read countless different cleaning methods because nobody does it the same way.

But I can say that benchrest shooters are primarily looking for maximum accuracy with barrel life being secondary. They will trade a little bit of barrel life for having that barrel shoot a little bit better. So the best benchrest shooters often use slightly aggressive cleaning methods. I used to think that was not for me, since I dont compete in CF BR, but having the barrel very clean for not a ton of work is also valuable to me. So I use bronze brushes every time and now and again I’ll use Iosso to get the barrel scrubbed really clean.

I am not dogging cops lack of knowledge here, but some people should use some basic common sense if you hear something fishy even from a so called "Professional Instructor"
but I have quite a few cop buddies where I live and one of them actually had an instructor (from one of them 3 day tactical training courses) tell him
DONT WORRY ABout cleaning!
I tried to provide some enlightenment for him to the contrary. (We used to train together so I was trying to be helpful and even show him that you need more than just Hoppes)
But Ya can't get through to a guy who took a 3 day tactical training course.
So, To prove a point, I purposely did not clean one of my AR's for 400 rounds
.......it now throws the bullets in sideways,
(I think his instructor should have clarified, to not call a time out in the middle of a firefight to clean)
but after you're done, yeah...probably a good idea, and may not even hurt.

Agree this is similar to what I do, including free all w bronze brush, the carbon really comes out.
Wheeler had a nice tip on here recently (thank you Alex) that works well —- apply Montana Extreme Copper Killer and scrub with a bronze brush —works great just don’t inhale!

On another note, not barrel cleaning, (since posting on barrel cleaning threads is like a gnostic religion).

I started using a CLP made by Lucas, (I sell it in my store). I can smell when I'm shooting. It smells like victory. Love this stuff.

I just looked at the pro shot cleaning rods, and it appears they only make them up to 42” working length, which means the handle will have to pass over the the end of the rifle stock. I don’t like the handle to pass over the end of the stock because it leads to the rod bending in the barrel. So I think these rods won’t work for me. My two favorite cleaning rods are 48” for my 6mm, and 52” for our 6.5mm and 7mm’s.

Dave, I see that Pro-shot has these extensions to make the 42” rods longer.
