Looking for Advice on 7mm rum Loads

captben

Capt. Ben Wiley
;D Just Purchased A 7mm Rum and would like to get some advice on loads from those of you
who shoot this caliber.

thanks,

Ben

I don't have a 7MM yet but I've been wanting one for some time so I do a lot of bullet drooling. It seems as though people are getting great results with the Berger 180 VLD and the Hornady 162 Amax, the 162 AMax has an amazing .625 BC which is awesome for that light of a bullet. Lapua doesn't seem to make a match bullet in .284 and Sierra's Match Kings don't have BC that compare to Hornady's or Berger's.

Have you gone to http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp yet? There's quite of data for the 7 RUM there.

Ive tried the 162 Amax, the 175 Sierra, the 200 wildcat and the 180 berger. The Burger wins hands down. I must add that the 200 wont stabilize in my barrel.

In my 7STW, (similar to your 7RUM) I shot 180 JLK's. Swampy is still making them. This bullet is at the top of the foodchain as far as BC in a .284 diameter. Retumbo would be the powder I would start with.

Hi, new guy here. I just happen to have been working on load development and a bit of accurizing for a Remington 700 XCR 7mm RUM that I recently bought. Remington had installed the plastic stock on off center so that the barrel was touching one side of the barrel channel and the other side was free floated but it shot fairly well so I figured they accidently got a decent action and barrel together in combination. I re-stocked it and had the factory crown re-done. Now it shoots from 1/2" to 3/4" with the following load: 150 grain Scirocco II bullet, 92 grains Hodgdon H-1000 and Federal 215 match primers. This load was reduced 2 grains from book maximum for increased accuracy and I am still getting 3435 fps. I don't shoot competition. This is just a hunting load for me so I don't know if that is of any help to you or not. Any way good luck.

Frank is right Retumbo is pretty hard to beat in this gun.

You guys shooting the 180s must have 9" twist right? Have you had problems with the bullets coming apart on the way to the target at the velocities you are pushing them at? BTW, what velocities are you getting out of the 180s in your 7RUMs?

I own a 7mm ultramag and If I were you I would get RETUMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I would take a chance on a powder for this cartridge that would be number one on my list.
