Looking for a steel target stand that works on hard ground

wyatt_earp_target_stand-3393.jpg The range I shoot at has steel bases and ferring strip uprights. cardboard is stapled between the wood up rights. The issue I have is the bottom is a pair of steel rods. The ground here is generally hard and getting in is reall are and once in the ground gives with the wind and the target sways back and forth.

I would like some kind of base that I can use to provide a stable target and easier to set up.

a base that I could pound in and then insert the range bas in would be acceptable.

I prefer to purchase rather than build one. Anyone have one of these?

Anyone have any other recommendations?

One of the features of a good portable/stable shooting bench is that it uses three legs (tripod) to compensate for rough, hard or uneven ground. Same concept applies to target stands but you'll have a very difficult time finding a target stand (other than archery) that fits the tripod description. I bit the bullet and built my own from PVC pipe, though it took two try's before I was satisfied with the stability. The trick was to make the contact points of the tripod as wide as possible while still being practical to carry down range. Mine is stable enough to do 100 & 300 yd. load development. BTW mine also uses furring strips for verticals FWIW

Here is a base that incorporates sliding legs to accommodate uneven ground.
The base is made by my son's company, and incorporates a center post section that will accept a 2x4 to hold a steel target. It also includes the cap for the 2x4 to hold the target. It has two sockets for 1X2 furring strips, so the stand is good for paper targets as well as steel targets.
It comes with a steel target, which you will find is a lot more fun than punching holes in paper. Having this assembly allows you to shoot steel or paper.

They have another low cost paper target base that accepts 1x2 furring strips.

In either case , it is difficult to keep the target from moving in the wind, short of placing sandbags/rocks on the base/legs. Hard, uneven ground makes the problem more difficult. When rigid targets are needed for precision shooting/competition, the target frames are generally permanent.

If you need something special, you can call them at 636-329-0142. If you are going to the NRA show in Atlanta this coming week, you could see their targets at Booth 4347.

I drive in long spikes, but you could use sandbags on a hard surface. These have been shot numerous times with .338's(Lapua and Edge), .300WSM, .284Win, etc and thousands of .223/556.

BTW, it's just plain old sections of black pipe from Home Depot. If you ever hit a section just screw in a new section. I unscrew the horizontal legs for easy transport. Targets rotate individually on a larger diameter section of black pipe separated by a few washers. I hang the AR500 plated using conveyor belt and hardened bolts.
