What to try next?

Sold a couple rifles, got a little cash, can't decide what to get next. I been trying to shoot ARA with my Anschutz, thought about having a rimfire bench gun built. Thought about getting a HP match rifle upper from White Oak Armory, but I do most of my shooting from the bench, and our range is limited to 300yds, so thought about getting a used centerfire benchrest rifle. I already load .223 and .308 on my Dillon. Hell, I want them all, but can only get one of them "next", just can't decide which one!

Put alittle in the gas tank and go to benchrest central and see all the bargains over there.

Save the money. Obammy's going to render them either useless or illegal by whatever means he can (if he gets in again).

My vote is for the WOA HP upper. No better way to learn solid fundamentals than with a sling & irons. I shot tiny groups from a bench for years, but I don't think I really learned how to shoot until I started shooting Highpower. You can spend as much money as you want to on HP(believe me, I've spent plenty), but at the end of the day, you can't shoot a good score unless you can hold the rifle steady...

Good luck,
Erik

+1. A couple guys I hang out with are really good off the bench, and they were talking about accuracy standards and what was the maximum that should be tolerated. I laughed and asked if they had ever heard of an very oldtime African PH named named "Karamojo" Bell (I think his actual first name was Walter). Both of them had. I told them that in his writings, he said that 4" at 100 yards was fine accuracy - of course that was shooting off hand.....

And now for something completely different. Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays. Cowboy Action.

I really like sporting clays and moved up to master class in less than two years. With all the airline travel, hotels, rental cars and such to attend major tournaments, I gave it up. Now I only shoot with a few friends from time to time and enjoy it a lot more. Plus, I am saving about $20k a year.

I shot Highpower back in the 90's, but after 9-11 our club lost access to camp Bullis, now they have to beg for access to other ranges, participation has dwindled to almost nothing, maybe 6-10 people show up to the matches, on a good week. Didn't shoot much of anything for a couple years. I got into skeet and sporting clays back around 2004, bought a Browning 525, MEC 9000 Hydrolic and several club memberships, was buying 100 round cards and shooting a lot, was working on getting a set of tubes, but most of the folks who play that game are much better off finantially than I am, when lead prices and gas prices went up a few years ago, had to give it up and go to something cheaper. Did USPSA and IDPA for a couple years, and was doing well with that, but then my job changed and I started working weekends, every weekend which makes attending matches impossible. Since then, the only matches I get to attend are a local ARA club that has matches on Wensday nights once a month. I'm at the range probably three days a week, on weekdays, I can shoot whatever I want, but it's by myself.

If you do most of your shooting from the bench get something different to learn some new and different skills. The White Oak upper sounds like a winner to me. If you decide to go that route also look into purchasing an upper from Frank White ( Compass Lake Engineering ) out of Florida i believe. He is a super guy and has been building AR,s for years. He built me a space gun some years back and it was an awesome rifle indeed.

I've tried .22 benchrest..madding...i don't care how much you spend on a custom rifle..you're still at the mercy of the ammunition..even paying top dollar( 10x ) does net preclude fliers..and in that company , a flier puts you in the loose column. i'm selling my ......22's and now shoot 6mmbr...much happier

Another vote for High Power style shooting. I've become addicted to fiddling around with Service Rifles. I've recently built a fairly nice AR-15 and also have a Garand. With the AR's you can pretty much eliminate gunsmiths from the equation if you want, (maybe not with a Match rifle) and tinker to your heart's content. It's like the rifle version of a Chevy V8. I'm not saying being a competitive benchrest shooter isn't a challenge and fun, but High Power seems to be much more about shooting and less about equipment. I'm just a newbie in Service Rifle shooting but it seems to me, $2k or less in total equipment and you have what you need to win. The rest is up to you. :) Plus the dang AR shoots really well off the bench too!!

I hear you guys, I learned a long time ago that it's the indian not the arrow, but there's nothing wrong with having a nice bow! I don't make enough money to win the equipment race. If I did, I'd have a safe full of BAT's, AI's, GAP's, Barrett's, T2K's and maybe a K-80 or Perazzi. Unfortunately, the ARA guys are the only local club that holds matches during the week, that I can attend.
