Looking for a new caliber.

Also I will add money is not as much the issue as time. Rather focus time on one or two rather than 7
That's what I decided to do. I am now down to 3 rifles, and don't need more. We have an array of 25 caliber bullets available to us.

Like I said, .270 Win. Factory loads work great on coyotes and deer. Remington Core-Lokt's aren't anything fancy but they work and they are cheap. If you want to reload for a little more precision, try 135 gr. Sierra MatchKings.

I see you are in Laurens, SC. I'm in Simpsonville and shoot at the Belton Gun Club.

,
For me. The choice would be very easy . Based on a lot of experience , I would choose the 6X47 L. Use the 70 gr Nosler BT for varmints and the 87 gr Berger for Deer . If you don’t like that bullet, the 90 gr Nos Accubond is a great bullet. Very accurate and easy to tune. You would have great brass, and a broad range of bullets to choose from.

What action is the 250 Ackley built on. Beautiful gun there.

What about 26 Nosler? And I haven’t heard a peep about 7-08? Any pros/cons? The 257 Weatherby or AI looks good too.

I mentioned a 260 or similar and a 7x47 Lapua. I think the 7mm-08 is an excellent choice.

I know that most feel like a 6mm is plenty for deer sized animals, and they certainly do work...I just prefer something a tad bigger for deer. So, I feel like a medium size case with a 264-284 bore is very good for an all around gun.

FWIW, the 7x47 will do virtually anything a 7mm-08 will do and give more flexibility for OAL in a short action magazine. Same can be said about a 6.5x47 vs a 260 etc.

Lots of choices out there and several good ones mentioned already.

If it were me, I'd build around great brass. Lapua being my first choice and then Norma.

Like what I’m reading about 6.5x47. I’m going to look into 7x47 now. More bullet choices with 7mm but that may not matter too much.

There is some info on here about a 7x47. Here's a link to one thread with some pretty good info on it. I've been itching to do one for myself. GSPV, on this site, would be a good one to talk to. I built one for him a few years ago for hunting and varmint matches. He seems very pleased with it.

7'S are great for hunting and paper punching. Not very much selection of varmint bullets tho.

I do like 6's for multipurpose. For example, I had a 6XC I built as a hunting rifle for my son. Decided he needed a more punch at long range for hunting elk so I built him a 6.5 Remington Magnum. Rather than letting the rifle become a dust collector, I am having the 6XC re-chambered in 6mm CM to be re-purposed as a long range varmint/back-up hunting rifle for my son. The rifle's primary purpose will now be varmint hunting. Going from medium game hunting rig to varmint rig is pretty easy for a 6mm.

I'm not sure why some are saying that there are no varmint bullets for a 7mm. Granted, the 6.5 may have a wider selection but I only need one...if it's the right one.

A good friend has a Cooper 7mm-08 that is the most accurate hunting rifle I've ever seen, with 110gr Speers. That bullet is unreal in that gun and is a very good varmint bullet as long as you don't save pelts.

The Nosler 120's are very good as well.. to name just a couple out of several that are available.

edit...I edited my post to say hunting rifle instead of factory rifle because his rifle has a Christensen Arms carbon wrapped barrel on it. I know they have mixed reviews but this one is unreal.
I've tried to get him to let me build him a BR rifle. He honestly doesn't see the point, when his 6lb hunting rifle shoots almost as well as a full blown and winning BR rifle. It's hard for me to argue that with him.

I've tried to buy it from him for years.

The 110 Speer TNT is a very accurate, very violent bullet. I’ve shot both it and the 120 Nosler with the nod going to the Speer in both of my 7x47s. It’ll turn a coyote inside out.

I shoot the 125 grain, 30 cal sibling in my 30 Major AR. It, likewise, is poison on varmints even at the reduced velocities that I have to run the 30 Major in the AR.

So, Mike, ready to build another 7x47. Borden action and stock, Brux HV barrel?
