Looking for a dog

Nmkid,
Here are a couple of trainers in the Richmond area .PawsCienda Pet Resort Jeff Stoneman . Jeff is a retriever trainer in Montpelier Va .And you also have Kristen Hoffman at Heron Hawk Kennels in Gum Springs Va . These 2 are very well known retriever trainers. Kristen is a full time retriever trainer ,Jeff owns the pet resort and also trains . it is a woman in New Kent that sells labs I know she would be asking over a 1000 per pup but I don't know her breeding stock or anything about these dogs. Her kennels name Break of Dawn Kennels .

Daughter has a GS. You are right about the shedding, hair everywhere. He's pretty OCD. Wants to be played with, taken to the park, walked, ect. ALL THE TIME, except when he wants to sleep, then its shedding hair on the couch or laying on the floor right next to your feet so you can't move them. Its like having a set of three year old twins.

Been going to the dogs for 60+ years. Regardless of breed, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Check out the breeder and if they are the least non responsive, run, do not walk away. Back yard breeders think their dogs are worth as much as well bred dogs. News Flash! THEY ARE NOT. Labs have many generic problems, most prevalent is HD. Demand a list of previous buyers and check them out. You are going to have a partner for 12-14 years, make it a good one.

No. I mean a real 4-legged one! My daughter is on a mission to get a Labrador. It must be black. So, I'm looking for a pup within 200 miles of Richmond, VA.
Why not go to the local dog pound. I bet you can get just what you want there. That and you will save a pups life.

Had pound dogs, ok if you know how to read them and what you want for sure, had some good ones, had some not so good ones,. The labs I got both had hind quarter issues, one had arthritis pretty bad. Current lab is from a good breeder that got out of breeding, had an accidental litter from dogs he was training, had 4 people I trusted send me to him for this one, almost 10 now, he is a good one. I know one guy that spent a lot of money from a "reputable" gun dog breeder, got one that was gunshy. Another buddy that has had 2 in a row with eating disorders, and the last one is a very slow learner, he is going to be OK, just has a different personality.
So, be careful, research the hell out of it first.

My GS is a couch potato, until I say squirrel GET OUT OF MY WAY or else she will take you with, She is close to 10 years old now, Two weeks ago she added to her wall of fame her 14th trophy, Most she caught mid air trying to jump from tree to tree, some she beat to the tree, Best year 6 confirmed, From sitting position she could leap high enough to see over a 6' fence well used to be able, Not a more loyal toddler could you ask for

We've had labs for 30 plus years. Each one is different than the last, but they all ended up as sweet lovable pets. Where they come from makes a difference, but the biggest difference is the owner. I've had one that would have been happy to be my boss had I allowed it, and I've also had the total opposite where I needed to take a much more reserved approach in training. Honestly, I haven't had a bad Lab. There are plenty of bad owners. Not so many bad dogs.

Here is Sal. 14 months old now. He's coming in to his own. Banner day for me. This is the second time I've posted this picture in the last few minutes.

they turn out how you make them turn out with the time you spend with them!
put them on a chain, you got a chain barker
keep them in the house all the time you get a house mutt
take them with you everywhere like i do and you have a friend for life!
labs job is to please its owner

When I speak about dogs, I mean labs. On my 5th generation of them. Have had both high end dogs with papers and a couple of acts of nature. Loved each and every one of them. They have been part of the best and worst days of my life. A new puppy some of the best and the trip to the vet at the end of life the worst. My latest is an accident but also the smartest. All have been kind and loving. At my grandfather's funeral one of his brothers told me about his experiences with labs. "telling me they get mean and he has sent his off to the air force." My life with labs has been nothing but positive. Today I provide daycare or he takes care of me while my son works. He expects 4 ball throwing sessions per day and to be fed on time, Been on a leash so rarely he believes it is a treat. Don't have the time to regale you with accounts of his fine behavior. They are many and occur daily. Have been asked when I got him and if I would please sell him. All of my dogs have been raised with love and attention and maybe that makes a difference. They love being a member of the family. My last 2 dogs fixed males believed they were human and other dogs need expect attention. Would not trade any of them and hope to see all of them in heaven. Good luck on your search and adoption.

Reminds me of my old shepherd, Helga.
She was a gentle giant.
