Longrange shooting competition in Italy

In Italy up to now we haven't any permanent long shooting range

so for security reasons we usually must shoot in mountain across

to a valleys.

In this shooting conditions we have strong and unexpected winds.

It's obviously that we haven't no wind's flags but we can use

the wind meters.

In these conditions we must use strong calibers as 338Lapua Magnum and 300WinMag.

Lately we start to shoot in 6.5-284Norma and 6,5x55sw but nothing of us shoot with any 6mm calibers,as 243win).

Do You have any suggests for this type of competition with this environment conditions ?

Calibers,Bullets, Tactics ?

Thanks in advance

Giuliano

The only tip I have for shooting in wind is shoot Berger VLD bullets. They are the least wind effected bullet I know of because of their very high ballistic coefficient. Shooting across valleys is a real problem because you not only have the side movement of the wind but you have the up and down drafts also.

I read an article that discusses shooting across canyons that may be of interest to you. I have done alot of long range practicing across mountain canyons myself and understand the difficulty of predicting wind when there are no indicators between the shooter and the target. Here is a link to that article http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/reading-wind.php

I'm not sure that it's possible in the match you're shooting in, but in Williamsport, PA it's typical to shoot all of your record shots as fast as you possibly can. The reason for this is because it's not possible to read wind across a span of 1000 yards across a valley. If you shoot, then wait for your condition to come back, then shoot again, the condition you waited for is completely different than the first condition, even though you thought it was the same.,I hope that made sense.) Basically, a wind change, either in the direction or the velocity) at 700 yards will probably go unnoticed, and there's nothing you can do to compensate for that. That's why they say to shoot as fast as possible.... simply hoping that the condition doesn't change while you're shooting your string of record shots.

Now I'm sure some guys will chime in here saying that I'm 100% wrong that you can't read wind at 1000 yards. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but to do it accurately enough to hold a tight 10-shot group at long range while the wind is changing is very rare. Not many people can do that. I envy the people who can.
