longest varmint shot

heres one even cliffy can laugh at... back in 1965 [while u'all are bragging lol's] i shot a woodchuck out at 325yrds with an rem. 742 bdl 30-06.. took 3 shots an 4hrs with my girlfriend spotting the misses
i just started shooting again about 2yrs ago an i can hit paper at 500yrds
so maybe this yr i'll have a new tail to tell.... :)

I live in the wrong state :( I just got into long range varmint shooting.Where Im at it is hard to get an area where I can shoot 500 yards. Hell I get excited when I see a critter out past 300. That being said, Last summer I killed a gray digger at 535 yards. Rem. Model 700 VS chambered in .243 AI topped with a Nikon Monarch 6-24x50. 75 grain Hornady V-Max

This year I will get to stretch it out, We have a Rockchuck and sage rat hunt planned for this spring.

Hi Luhrs, you must shoot in Wyoming. Wide-open ranges where five-hundred yards is a stone's throw. The Red Desert is unpopulated for many hundreds of miles. Wyoming will welcome your tourist dollar. Wyoming has less human population than most big cities elsewhere. Pronghorn antelope out-number people in WY. "Not to mention" prairie dogs. Cliffy

Hi RichG, no, I would never laugh at honest attempts at long range PRACTICE. It can be done, but not by "hunters" who practice once-a-year before the "big hunt." I work at "the" range to assist hunters to sight-in before hunting season. From driving long divots in the grass twenty-five yards in front of the target to over-shooting by four feet at 100 yards, I've seen it all. Even after I click them in to hit paper at 100 yards, I think "where were you all year?" Yet, they are smart enough to seek our experience, and most probably earn ten-times my pultry income. Cliffy

A friend and former WY resident are trying to get together a pronghorn hunt over there. It will be a DIY hunt.

Friday evening I got my longest song dog kill. 370 yards with the AI. The stupid thing hung up and wouldnt get closer. He made the mistake of sitting long enough to get him ranged and and shot. Those 75 Gr V-Max's put the song dogs down in a hurry. Not real fur friendly though. ;D

Ok, this is for real, 22-250 Sierra 55bk at 3725 fps,rem 40x hart 26 bbl.
5dogs, 570yds leica range finder, 1st dg the back one took 3 shots, the next 4 one shot each same adjustments, taking the back dog to the front dog Leupold 6x20x they just stood there,
time 4 minutes - witnessed by son.

Travelor it only counts if we think of a drone as a varmint. :) Still not too shabby.

The coolest shot I saw was a TOW hitting a buffalo. Stupid thing was sitting right in front of a trash can everyone had been shooting at. The ground was nice and brown and he blended right in. I do not know how far it was. I was on another hill goofing off looking through the scope at the right time and place.

sscoyote,
there was a 3-5mph from the most favorable direction, my back about 4:30/5:00, i was shooting almost dead on except for the effect of the distance on drift. thus the shots necessary to get on and the conditions to allow the other 4 shots to stay on.
mirage did not show any gust effect

cliffy, what was that calculation @ 1 1/4 mile w the zipper. post some pix of your groups @ 500 yds....thank you...moa of your scope base? thanks...

My longest varmint shot is not very impressive distance speaking, only 450yds on a Pa groundhog. The interesting aspect of the shot is a 40gr VMax out of a 223,starting out about 3700fps. just punched a clean hole through it,no expansion to speak of.

3 ounce he man special at camp had to walk 2K just to get to where it was, think it was at about noon 35 degrees 35 mph wind outta the north as usual and remember the smell of fresh polish sausage and kraut ........ ooops sorry the shot 2K away a dark anjio Casa noble several witnesses all unreliable

I got a running woodchuck at 1200 yds ricocheting it off a 3" stone that was 4 yds behind him with a 22 long rifle. took him right in the bung hole!
I will admit there wasn't much wind and with a very nice peep sight!

P-dog at 914 yds, lasered back to my truck for a good reading with a Leica 1200. 87 gr Hornady out of a Cooper 243wssm, IMR 4350 powder. Scope was a Leupold 8.5-25 with the varmint reticle.
Longest p-dog shots with .223AI out of an AR that I built have been numerous in the 600-625 yd range.
Generally it isn't too hard to position on a dogtown to minimize unfavorable wind.

In the book "precision shooting at 1000 yards", Kreg Slack of Pueblo, Colorado took a prairie dog at 3125 yards. Him and his friend are gunsmiths that shoot only extreme long range, 2000 yards and beyond. He had a spotter present at the time of the shot. THAT is the record. TF
