It rained most of the day, but around 3 the sun came out so I decided to take advantage and cut the grass. It was after 5 by the time I was done and the clouds returned, but not the rain. I decided to go to the farm with the no show hog of last week, to see if I could get a bead on houdini hog.
Instead, a different hog showed itself on the top of a weed covered dirt mound. There were some trailers in the background so I drove the truck to a closer vantage point where I was certain I could hit the hog and not the trailers. But wouldn't you know it, another no show.
But then off in the distance and to the right of the trailers, I spotted one that came out of some high grass. I ranged him at 130 yds and decided to give the 17 HMR an opportunity for its longest shot to date. Lined up the crosshairs, got the gun settled and squeezed the trigger. The surrender was given immediately. Yes!
Since it was getting late and I figured no other ghogs would be showing up, I drove the truck for the retrieval and pics. Here are the DTR and the entrance wound. Another female. The last three or four have been females.
After the pics, I decided to find a place to put the hog for the vultures that was away from the owner's house and, in the process, heard some rustling of grass. I looked to my right and caught the tail end of a ghog running for what I presumed was its burrow. I put the dead hog on top of a log and walked over to where I saw the disappearing hog and sure enough, a new burrow and another potential victim.
I also checked the dirt mound nearby where I saw the first hog and found yet another burrow and potential victim. Will work out the scenarios in my head for the next time I show up to try and increase the 2012 count. It may be a while, since it's supposed to rain the next few days.
