Longer Range stuff

I shot a group at the range one nice day that had 3 shots in 3-5/8 Inchs at 600 yards. I was planning on shooting a Five Shot Group, but I quit at Three Shots before I messed that group up. Shooting off a Harris Bipod with a squeeze butt bag. That is my best group ever with a handgun at 600 yards.

Nosler M48 NCH Chambered in 22 Nosler
Scope, Weaver Classic Extreme 8-32x50.
Not sure which bullets I was firing, either SMK 77 or Hornady 75 ELD-M

I did not make any notes, I could have been shooting factory 75's that I got from Mark Hampton. He had some left over from a magazine article he did on a prototype Nosler M48 chambered in 22 Nosler.

2022 Buck PJ with Contender.jpgIMG_20251220_141244942.jpg
357 Herrett TC with 2x Leupold, 180 grain SSP and largest buck I ever shot, and my 10 inch 30 Herrett with 2x Leupold making fireform loads for my plinking gun. I also have a 22K hornet, a carbine length 17FB and a 7-30 Waters (that I can't form a liking to...). I am slowly buying barrels in pistol format and am keeping my eyes open for a 14 inch match 22 and a 218 Bee or 221 FB. I like the Contender but I never owned one back when MS shooting was the thing. Always late to the party...

I guess I should have mentioned that "long Range" for me with these two guns is about 200 yards. I have deer kills as far as 165 yards, with several just over 150, all with that 357H. I shoot some steel at 200 with it as well and off a bench and using the 2x it is pretty consistent on a 4 inch square. When my eyes were better it would hold about an inch at 100. The 30 is still in developement...

A few other odds and ends of my builds and my guns for shooting steel:

This is my Standing unlimited any sight, XP 7 TCU cast only gun. 145 RCBS Silhouette, cast with 15g H-4227 and sperical buffer filler. Sinclair Action, Taylor 4 oz trigger, Gilmore 2 MOA dot, level bubble, rear ring, French walnut.

This is the 30 Harm, a 30 caliber, conversion on a DW 357 Super Mag with Douglas 10" bbl 1-10 twist and rounds, the 200 gr 30 cal cast shot 2/10 inch at 50 in trsts. I built it on a scored 445 cylinder. The TC pistol scope is for function and basic load testing only. The case is made from a 25-20 with the neck and shoulder straightened, is .150" longer than a 30 carbine & with a rim.

This is my XP 6.5 BR, case is based on a 6 BR, formed with bushing dies, created to shoot 1/2 size matches to 200 with 120 grain SMKs using H-414 powder. 2x8 USA Burris, Taylor 4oz trigger, walnut with maple burl tip and cap, made the base and mount in my shop.

This is my long distance match gun, shot the rifle silhouette course to 500 with a handgun. 6.5x08 before the 260 existed. 120 SMKs using H-414 at 3,215 fps in my 24" Rem 700s. Also used the 6.5x08 in feather matches out to 300 meters. LW 1-8 match barrel, fluted ported, Taylor 4 oz trigger, Africa wood, light weight.

This is my 1st year production Dan Wesson 445 Super Mag with the wide headspace for the 30-40 brass based cases with the thick rims. Will launch a 240 grain at 2,000 fps. Yeah, it is a beast with 296 and the fire ball is the size of a 30 gal drum. A 40 round match will punish your shooting arm joints. A reason I went to the 357 Super Mag.

I have a few that ended up in my possession a few years ago when a friend passed. I’ve shot all of them, but this 338/408 CheyTac built by Alex Wheeler is my favorite, just because it’s so ridiculous. I need to dig them out and shoot them one of these days. This picture is mid recoil when we were shooting it off of a PRS barricade one time. I’ve shot this gun as far as 1820 yards, the original owner shot it past 2000 yards on a few occasions. What length barrel and twist is that?

What action?

What brake?

Nice looking for sure.

It’s a 20” Lilja, 9” twist if I remember correctly. The brake is a Terminator T-5. The info I have says it’s getting 2890 fps with a 300gr OTM from the 20” barrel.

The action is a BAT CT multi flat, in a Joel Russo stock made out of bubinga. I know Alex Wheeler did the metal work, and I believe he finished the stock as well. The wood is absolutely beautiful in person.

It wasn’t just a show piece either, the original owner hunted with it a few times. I was with him when he shot a bear at around 400 yards with it. Of course he was setup with a portable bench on a landing, but it still counts as being in the field! lol
