Rather than hijack the other gentlemen's post about long range scope advice I thought I'd post my own query.
The other discussion brings into mind some of my own questions which are related. For the last year or so I've been running a Leupold VX3 LRT 8.5-25x50. I've had some accuracy issues with the gun that it's been mounted on, which did not seem to be present with another scope... but results aren't completely conclusive. That said, I have removed it from that rifle and plan to mount it on the 6XC which Mark Pharr is putting together for me right now. The primary purpose for the gun is long distance fun out to 1000 yards, but I'd also like to try F-Class, time and budget permitting. Considering some confidence issues I have with the VX3 of late, I've been entertaining dumping it with the Mark IV rings it's mounted in, in hopes of getting enough to pick up a Sightron 10-50x60. I've seen the VX3's go used for about $750 without rings, and the Sightron go for $850.
Funds are limited, so I need to try to get as close to an even steven swap as possible. Is this something I should seriously pursue? The Sightron has more magnification and finer adjustments which should make it better for my intended purpose. Money-wise, what are the odds that I can get out of the VX3+rings for enough to pick up a used SIII 10-50 sans rings? The VX3 has the fine duplex reticle btw.
