I am still pursuing this crazy hobby but there are VERY few still doing it. We did use bigger calibers back in the day but they are no longer necessary for 1000-1500 possibilities, in fact a rare .22 can kill them at 1000, 6 meat 1300, 6.5 to 1500 or so, .338s to well over a mile, etc. It is a game of highest BC possible which normally means the highest throw weight as well. Powders have gotten better and bullet performance is moving quickly as well. With few exceptions the rifles are special built, often wildcat calibers, and they have $2500-$3500 glass on them, use special rangefinders, often Big Eye, front and sometimes rear rests, wind meters, and very good ballistics programs which are now available on smart phones. It is very difficult to do without a second person, the spotter in case of misses. Make no mistake, it takes a lot of special work to get the most out of a load and a lot of time spent at progressively longer distances. It cannot be done by a casual shooter.

I don't know what you mean by "is there a sight" for this type of hunting. If you mean "site" the answer is definitely NO.

One of the reasons for few doing it is the growth in number of Coyotes causing many that hunted local to have to go distances including several states to find enough to make it worthwhile.

Another cause is the great number of people really enjoying shooting steel in various venues and competitions.

The biggest problem really hits you first which is places to allow the long shot that have groundhogs! The only thing you have to fight this is considerable work all year long setting up for a good season.

I skipped this topic originally since your title simply read 'hog hunting'. There are a ton of places to go shoot wild hogs so I left it alone.

Ground hogs, rock chuck or yellow bellied marmots, are a different subject altogether. I've shot rock chucks out west and ground hogs from the Midwest to east coast. I usually find them on private land so permission is mandatory.

There are numerous youtube videos of expeditions for rock chucks but little mention of organized outfitters for such a trip. Here is one I found recently:

There are others I'm sure but you have to put some effort into searching for them. Try the business tact of networking with interested folks on the varmint hunting websites. Pool your resources.

Regards.

Opinions are like a$$holes - everybody has one. And here is mine.

I like the 6mm/243 caliber for long range groundhog shooting. I prefer the 6XC and 6SLR but there are a whole bunch of cartridges that will work. My bullet preference is the 105 AMax and fortunately I still have 2000. Any 6mm cartridge that can push the 105 class bullet at 3000 fps can slay groundhogs out to 1000 yards and a little beyond.

Wow, I thought it was hogs(oink). I said to myself the prefect animal to shoot long range. Because I could give a crap if they die on the spot or run off gut shot. On that note let me say in Texas those little buggers are considered a pest. So I think I will start long range hog shooting. Thanks for the idea.
