Long Range close to Kansas?

Hello everyone. Longtime lurker. My son and I would like to get involved in some sort of LR competition (600+ yards) and don't know where to go to see some shoots and help decide which discipline is for us. My son is in Wichita, I'm in the middle of the state. I looked at the Kansas Rifle Association pages and didn't see a schedule or range listings. Can you point us in any direction no more than one state away?

Thanks, Jeff

If thinking F-class, check these out.

Tulsa OK, has a range for High Power Rifle out to 1K. Google Red Castle Gun Club. I shot there once in 2002/2003 and had a great time.

OKC has a high power rifle range out to 600 also.

+1 For Colorado Rifle Club (CRC) in Byers Colorado.

I've been a member since 2000. We've got 1000 yard High Power, 100-200 yard full bench Shuetzen, and 500 meter steel Sillohuette ranges. As well as 50-100 yard smallbore, several handgun bays, and a sporting clays course.

The club runs a VERY full schedule of matches of all kinds almost year round.

Wow, thanks for the rapid response. I didn't know Tulsa went to 1K. I shot BR there a couple times back in the 70's. Looks like that will be the closest (3 hrs) for both of us. The Byers range sounds good but that would have to be more than a day trip. I'll put it on the list. Thanks again for the help.

Hey Jeff

I'm the match director at Tulsa. We have a 1000 yard match coming up on March 31st. Let me know if you want to come down I will need to give you a gate code. I shoot F-open and if you guys want to take a few shots with my rig your more than welcome. Let me know if I can help in any way.

280man,would it be possible for u to email some info about that rwnge in Tulsa? Like directions, rules and regulations.I've never been to a shoot and would really like to check it out.

Thanks for the invite, Rick. It's a little early yet for me to pin down my plans but I have circled that date on my calendar. I am in the final stages of a .243 Win tubegun build. I figured from what I have read on here that I can adapt it to suit just about any game out there. As it gets closer and I know for sure if we can make it, I'll give you a PM. Thanks again.

280man, you are correct but it's good to know that I can get a lot of trigger time 1 hour from home. I'm still considering your March shoot, 1K intrigues me.

I'm stuck in central Kansas also...but I knew Hutchinson had a 600 yard range. Most of my long range shooting is with guys that have a 800-1000 spot in their pasture...on steel plates. It's hard to find a place around here unless you own a bunch of land.

The guys at Hutch do allow F-class shooters during their midrange matches. We had three F-class shooters for the fall MR State Matches last Nov.

Currently, Hutch is the only civilian 600yd. HP range in the state. Mill Creek at DeSoto goes out to 500. Sand&Sage R&P Club near Garden City has a 500M HP silhouette range, which we also use for BR Varmint Silhouette. PM me here for contact info for S&S.

I hear you Rascal. Between my neighbors ground and mine I can shoot out to 600 from my back deck. The thing I'm looking for is a place to shoot where I can learn from those that know what they are doing. I haven't shot competitively for 25 years or so. Most of what I know probably isn't in vogue anymore. I can read all about it ( and do) but if I can see it in action, it makes more sense.

Jeff: some of us locals around Hays are trying to get a place north of here that might get us to 800 yards with some steep chalk bluffs as a background/backstop. That would be about as close to long range as we can find in the area. Local gunclub only permits rifles to 200 m.
