long range chucks

I shoot a lot at chucks 900+ on the family farm when the chucks are actually plentiful

I have 2 setups for this depending on my mood

300 WSM with 0 FB running 125 gr V-Max out of a 1:15 twist barrel

6mm AI 10 twist running 87 grain V-Max's

Both are a lot - A LOT of fun when you connect

Here's some vid's of a dasher and 6 Ackley

That chambering has caught on quite a bit near me in the past year or so, a few guys have even built deer rigs in it and use the 125 Accubonds.

As for long range, I've got an old heavy gun 338 Yogi that I use and my hogging partner uses a 300 Ackley in the same configuration. We have some fields that are over 1500yds and the 30 and 33 calibers seem to work better for us at those ranges than the 6s. Not only in BC but also it's a lot easier to see a 300gr dirt splash than a 105gr one. I'm not knocking the 6s at all, the larger bullets just work better for me.

There is no such bullet as a 30 cal 125gr V-Max.

?? ?? ??

Probably meant to say the 125 Nosler BT, the small 30 cal V-maxs are 110s

If you're interested in it just do a search on Richard Franklin Varminter.

I've been wondering for some time now why there hasn't been a higher demand for heavier varmint bullets. Any of the heavy a max would be a nice addition to the varmint bullets imo

I always thought a long range Barnes X bullet would be nice for hogs way out there, since they peel back with very little resistance low velocity hits would make for a more humane kill. Sadly though none of their offerings seem to be too spectacular.

Not intended to high-jack the thread.....

What is really needed is a new-wave varmint bullet, that utilizes a powdered ( metal ) core.

These would be long for their comparative wt ( example: the new powdered-core 55gr .224" cal
vs a 55V-Max .224" cal ) .

Longer bullet length would be one factor in their high(er) B.C.
The necessity of longer bullet length would also likely contribute to long(er) cartridge oals.

If practical, manufactureres could consider covering both traditonal bullet wt ranges
for higher volumne sales; and even longer/heavier powdered core offerings... for shooters w/ guns that can accomodate & use such bullets.

There are limits at both ends of the bullet wt spectrum ( per calibre ), as regards what weights would be needed to make such bullets workable. Bullet jacket construction, boat tail length, and other design considerations also factor in.

A hyper-deadly groundhog bullet, even @ extended ranges.

Powdered core bullets have manufacturing problems of their own, and the last time they were tried, they cost ~$2 each, in 1980s dollars :( :( :(

The BC can be improved with standard bullets by simply lengthening them - there is no rule that states that a 55gr SMK must be 0.820"... put some empty space in it, behind the plastic tip and make it 1.10".

The limit is not the bullets, it is the huge number of older varmint rifles still in the field with slow twists - in spite of the brilliant wisdom possessed by all the members on this site, there are about a billion shooters out there, toting 14"-T rifles, that do not understand the relationship between twist and length (not weight).

The new .224" 69gr Tipped SMK looks very good if the jacket is not too thick.

And how would one go about doing this????

Like it says, design the bullet with a larger hollow space behind the poly tip... it makes the bullet longer, with an ogive with a longer radius, ergo, higher BC, with the same weight.

BCs and accuracy are fine lines ....... At a thousand yards , throwing knifes work OK . No need for a magnum , the speedy 6 MM (243) guys have it figured out .

Yeah but dropping a 5 shot group after sighters is a little different from first shot cold bore and guessing the wind dope. The older I get the more I want a BC of .4+ with good KE

6BR Stiller Diamondback R-bolt L-Port Drop Port, built for live G-hogs and the occasional match. 8 twist

6.5x47L BAT HR-Pic

These over most fields but on occasion the 30's or 338's come out.
