long range chambering

Hammer47

I suffer fools poorly.
Have a fast twist bbl in a CPS action chambered in 7STW which is just too much rifle for an injured shoulder. My question is, what would be your 7mm choice for shooting mostly at 600 to 1000 yds and with minimum recoil? I was thinking about the 7/08 or the 284. Regards...g

Hammer

The straight 284 is a very good cartridge especially if you set up your chamber to use necked up 6.5 x 284 brass. The old Winchester stuff wasn't exactly known for its high quality. I'd opt for it over the 7/08 simply because of the added capacity that will give you more options. Don't leave out the 280 Remington and its bigger brother, the 280 Ackley. Both are excellant long range cartridges.

One thing to keep in mind Hammer, is that to shoot the longer distances you are still going to have to shoot the heavier high BC bullets at a reasonable velocity. That means recoil. There's just no way to get away from it regardless of the case size.

I would sure look close at the 7mm SAUM for what your looking to do.
I really like the 284 Winchester but this 7mm SAUM is making me change my mind little by little. It will still bite a little but not as bad as that STW does..........
Put a brake on it ......
