Long bullets loaded with short jump

Hi

I have a krieger 28 inch 1:9 barrel chambered for 243 AI. I used to shoot 107 Nosler CC's in the original 1:9 Ruger barrel with great success. After chambering, i realised that the jump is shorter than it used to be in the Ruger VT.

Do you think it is an issue seating the longer 107 bullets deeper into the case? The boat tail and bearing surface protrudes below the neck-shoulder junction.. It also has an impact on the powder volume...

Would you recomend lighter, shorter bullets?

Regards

If the gun shoots really well with them bullets, I would just get it throated for those bullets. It will lower pressure and it is not good for the bullet pressure ring to be below the neck shoulder junction. You can even buy a throater from Kiff and do it yourself and I don't believe a gunsmith charges that much to throat it out. Matt

Just seat them to the right depth. Your accuracy node for powder charge may be 0.3-0.4 grains lower, depending on how much deeper they are seated. The velocity probably won't be much different than before.

I found that you run a high risk of having pressure issues if the bearing surface goes past the neck shoulder junction. The first 1-2 firings is typically fine then the problem creeps in and you get the odd primer blank for the same load.
The warning signs during loading is when some bullets don't seat to the correct depth and are many thou out and adjustments of the die don't easily push the bullet in further or it suddenly goes in a long way.

I believe that it was due to a small donut forming in the neck shoulder area. My rule of thumb is - don't go there.
