Long Bomb

I took a little trip to Kansas to do some calling with a friend. The weather was on the warm side and the coyotes were not as responsive as they could have been. At the end of a stand I always scan the entire area with my binos before standing up to catch the occasional “tire kicker” that won’t come in. This guy was standing at the head of the draw just looking. I ranged him at 730 yards, plus or minus, a couple of times, and told my partner I was going to have a go at him. I dialed the scope. and held the estimated windage, and let it go. As soon as I could pick him up in the scope after the shot, he was in a full sprint into the draw with obvious signs of the hit. It took 30 minutes to get back to the pickup and drive around the head of the draw, but it didn’t take but a few seconds to find him.

That’s one of my .22 Creedmoor rifles. Everyone needs at least 2 of those you know. This one is on a old 700 that I trued up and has a Krieger 8 twist at 21 inches. McMillan HTG adjustable stock and a Nightforce NX8 2.5 x 20. Lapua Scenar 69’s are super accurate and are flatter than the heavier .22 bullets out to about 750 yards. I give up a bit of drift to the bigger bullets, but I prefer the accuracy over the drift advantage. Anyhow, it makes a superb open country coyote rifle.

Did you give up much speed with the 21” barrel? I’m in the process of building a lighter rifle (Bartlein #3) for a 22/6mm Ackley Improved to shoot 80-90 gr bullets.

My calling partners barrel is 24 inches and his has about 100 fps over mine. I have another barrel that is the same 21 inches, and will nearly equal the velocity of his 24 incher with the same load. It's just a fast barrel. From a practical standpoint it really doesn't make much difference in the field. At 700 yards I have to dial .5 MOA more than him. 2 clicks take about half a second and doesn't mean much. If you have to dial, it doesn't matter if you need another couple of clicks.

You have any experience with that Lapua 69 in at 3700+ FPS in a hot .22 like the 22-6MM AI as mentioned above?

I don't, but one of my calling partners does. If the rifle has a node at 3700 they will shoot very well. At 3700 they will kill 200 fps better than my setup. :)

Thanks. I’ll give it a try.
