Logan Lathe Questions

I want to start chambering a some barrels for myself and some friends. Mostly 30br, 6ppc and an occational hunting barrel. This lathe became available in my area and I wanted to see if anybody had any info or experience with one. It is a Logan Powermatic Variable Speed model#1110007 11' lathe. The Lathe has had very little use and hasn't been used at all in almost 20 years. It was used as a gunsmith lathe so it does have some tooling that will come with it. Any info such as value, quality or any problem areas that I may need to address would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

I would say it is better than the imports. If it doesn't have the H after the serial # it has a soft bed and it has a threaded spindle......jim

Better make sure the variable drive works ok. Have heard the Clausing vari drives are somewhat troublesome and expensive but know nothing of the Logan setup. Also have been told Logan parts are expensive. Just an FYI so you don't jump into something and find out later it is a money pit because of parts availability and/or expensive.

I had one of these machines years ago it was a pretty nice machine. If the machine is in nice shape it was most likely well maintained or used very little. Check the variable speed drive as suggested make sure it functions corrrectly.

Thanks for the replies. I will check out the lathe a little further and make sure that the variable speed drive works. Does anyone know what a fair value would be for a lathe like the one described. I have only been able to find one like it for sale so I'm not sure of the value. Seller has no idea what to charge. I am always looking for a great deal but I don't want to take advantage of anyone either.

Try used machinery lists on-line. Have you priced any other machines, make an offer. All machines are a money pit when it comes to repairs. Imports are OK when new but almost no parts when worn. Will the headstock allow a barrel blank to go thru?

I own a southbend 13" toolroom lathe and leblonde bought all the parts for them and they are real expensive.I would rather have the logan anyday over any junk import. That unit with low hours is worth 3500.00 to most.Try to get it as cheap as you can and make the seller run it for you before you hand over the money.

I and one of my machining Buds have variable speed Clausings. We have no trouble with them. The Logan is a good lathe if it is in good shape. I would say $1500-$2000 tops unless it has a lot of tooling.
