Could you chamber a typical 30" 1.25" barrel on this lathe?

Your Buck isn't a set tru? I have a small collection of L00 chucks and backer plates but I'll have to do some digging to come up with a list. I know I have a good Pratt Burnerd 3 jaw set tru type and a good 7" Cushman 4 jaw. I also have a 6" Buck set tru backer with several chucks that are useable but worn. If it's above zero this weekend I'll go out and make a list if your interested.

I think I'd be interested in the Cushman 4 jaw. It's an L00 chuck or a plain back? The jaws are independently adjustable right? Seems there are self-centering 4 jaws out there.

Shewww, I didn't know reputable chucks cost that much lol. I'm going to have to step up my budget.

Thanks!
Price a Buck, they make Bison look like a real bargain...... Seems like the chuck is the most ignored item for the hobby guys. Ain't no substitute for a good lathe chuck...

I much prefer a cathead on both siodes of the spindle. Below is on a Loo backing plate.

I'm interested in this. Any problems with the brass tipped screws holding while chambering or turning threads? Seems there wouldn't be enough grip on the barrel for actual machining without the barrel slipping.

Thanks!

It's never been a problem in my home-made fixture.

How to you get the barreled centered in the catheads? I can understand getting the barrel dialed in and running true but how do you ensure the barrel is dead center so your tailstock is centered with the bore when chambering?

I use a PTG piloted range-rod with tenths indicators, or a long reach indicator. This dials in the barrel better than my tailstock so I use a floating reamer holder.

i always thought an unsupported cathead like that would flex a little but i know alot of people chamber that was and are successful.

Looking to get a lathe to learn on and get started. Just curious if this would handle any barrel chambering for when I am ready to eventually do that? Can't find much info on it. Has a 1.375" through hole.

The Lathe that you learn on, get started on should be the one that's going to last 50 years. If you want to see if you'll like it Go take the machining courses at your community college. Their learner lathes are big old tool room lathes. I guess some of them teachturning and faceing on the little jets but............
