Loads for 22-250 Ai with 75 gr. eld bullets

Looking for a good load for a 22-250 ai 26" varmint barrel, 1-8 twist using the hornady 75 gr, ELD bullets

My 26 inch barrels shot well with enough H1000 to hit 3275fps, sparked by a CCI 200 in a Remington or Winchester case. Neck tension .002 to .003. This was with the old 75 grain Amax or an 80 grain Berger VLD.

Most guys favor powders in the H4350 burn range. Close to max loads for the standard 22-250 make a good starting point. It's usually an easy round to work with, especially in a quality 26 or 28 inch barrel.

One of my .22-.250 AIs is in love with the 75 gr. ELD-M, 43.2 gr. of RL-26, fire formed Winchester brass, Winchester large rifle primer and the bullet seated .020 short of the lands. 3,400 fps and some change out of my 26" barrel and moderate pressure by all indications.

RL-26 really delivers speed in this case with the heavier bullets, more so than anything else I've tried. RL-23, H-100V and H4831SC performed well during load development but nothing produced velocity like RL-26. Field testing has been limited to a chip shot at a porcupine (about 125 yards) the last time I was in upstate NY and the results were, shall we say, spectacular!

RL26 has turned out to be one of those powders that really deliveries, with regard to velocity, in many different cartridges. I'm hoping the new Viht N565 will do the same, but if not, I'll just keep using RL26.

I use RL23 with the 75gr ELD-M and it is accurate as can be, very consistent. I started at 39gr and kept going up to 42. Never saw pressure signs and backed down to 41.5 for 3370 fps. Sig fire formed brass, BR2 primers. Rifle is a Savage, 26" 8t 3 groove. Best group to date is 0.58" at 300 yards. Easily shoots in the 3s at 100 every time.

Forming load is a 69gr SMK with RL15. Groups around 2" at 300 for several five shot groups.


Edit: I forgot to mention I'm using a .440 G1 BC with these at about 200' asl.

I’ve had really good luck with IMR 4831 in regards to accuracy but it’s a bigger to load. Too big of kernels for my liking.

R17 has produced some very good velocity number and accuracy as well.

R23 would be another one that would be on my short list to use. It’s produces very good accuracy and speed in the 6 Creedmoor.

I’m anxious to try R26 as well.
