Loading for a LOOOOONG throat 30-06 target rifle

I have a vintage Target rifle in 30-06 and it has a very long throat. the rifle is just being used for fun target shooting nothing formal. 190grain Sierra matchkings are even to short to touch the lands and stay in the case. Does anyone know a long flat based bullet that could be used? If the Matchking was not a boat tail I think it would work. Boat tails are not really needed at the distance I am shooting at. I just need to seat the bullet out as far as I can.

Thoughts?
 
Have you tried berger 185gr match classic hunters. They work good for me in my weatherbys and howa. They have a alot of freebore and when they touch the lands they still fit in the magazine.
 
Look in to Barnes solid copper line and also Cutting Edge lathe turned bullets. Your twist may need to be faster to accommodate a longer bullet, though.
 
I have ROY Dunlap's personal 30-06. It takes the go,no-go, AND field headspace gauges. The 200 Sierras are about half way up the neck and still don't touch rifling.
It shoots small groups at near magnum velocities.
He did it on purpose to gain an edge.

If it's a 10 twist, try the 210 bergers....... And you could be .100-.120 off the lands and it will shoot excellent
 
Thank you all that have replied. I have tried many things and have had trouble getting this rifle to group. I am willing to try any recommended load/bullet for this rifle. Anyone have any recommended loads that may work better? i am old school and my go to powder is generally 4064 but no luck with this rifle.
 
Other powders that have worked well for me in the '06 with heavies include Reloader 19 and 22, IMR & H4831, H4350, Reloader 17 (burns barrels though). Berger 185s are good with some jump and very accurate in several rifles.
 
I was not having much luck loading my standard bullets. I tried all flavors of what I generally go with. In my head I thought I needed to seat out further. I am not sure if that is the issue or not but I suspect it is. I will try some of the things this group has suggested. I will also pick up a long flat based bullet so I can seat it out further and see if that makes a difference.

Try some Alco Bullets
 
ok i got some 200grain flat based bullets. If i just back off the rifling a bit the over all length is 3.48 (for 30-06) is that safe? that is WAY long.

Will those rounds fit your magazine? What does the reload manual suggest for the loaded length?
I suggest you work the load up with the bullet seated at the recommended length and once you find the best accuracy with the powder you are using you can use seating depth to fine tune the group size.
 
Twist rate? Could be slow and like lighter bullets better. Try some 168/175 grain bullets with reputation for not needing jam to shoot well. Also, I think I would go for a powder with a little more horsepower. Sometime I find long throats to like going fast.
 
the mil spec ammo was 150 gr ,,,so I would try some Sierra 150 gr spitzer 2130 (not boat tail) and use 4895 or 4350 powder ,,,,Roger
