Loading a modern 1886 in .45-90 (not .45-70)

As the title says, and the search function will not search for (for you search Stasi).

I have Starline brass, a new '86 and 450gr cast bullets (coated). Any suggestions?

Tangent: Just today a fellow had a 50-90. He was able to find about 30 rounds.
I have everything I need to make them, but load data. I know a modern '86 is a strong action (but with no primary extraction, definitely will not take a max pressure load), and I've seen threads on this here before, but CANNOT find them by searching. Stupid search function says .45-90 is too short a word.

The search seems to be broken since that last software update - absolutely unusable for anything now. I go to duckduckgo and search there with accurateshooter included to find things.

As far as I could tell, his rifle was made more than 50 years ago.

You haven’t stated if your going to use blackpowder or smokeless. If smokeless, the .45-70 load data reaches the max recommended pressures of the 1886 action. The extra 0.3” of case is just that, you can’t necessarily add more powder and the rifle live to tell about it. I load my Turnbull 1886 up to around 2100 fps with a 325 grain Hornady FTX. They aren’t exactly pleasant to plink with. There are some limitations on case length and being able to cycle them through the magazine, elevator and into barrel. Without trimming and using the cannelure to crimp, they’d be too long in a .45-90 as well unless you trim them. What powders do you have? H-4198, H-4895, Trailboss all good but unless you have some probably unobtainable. Do your bullets have gas checks?

Smokeless.

I have pretty much most powders available. No gas checks, but the bullets are coated (nobody makes coated bullets with gas checks that I've seen). Coating seems to relieve the need for a gas check.

Manufacturers chamber 86s in .460 & .500 S&W, both are 65K PSI cartridges. Both also cause hella extraction problems at that pressure. I figure 40-45K PSI would be a reasonable max for a modern 86.

I’d shoot the mild 45/70 loads. I had to listen to Clint when hot loading for my 1886.
“A man’s got to know his limitations!” When I didn’t heed that advice, my shoulder got all black and blue!
