Loading 223 for F-Class F/TR

Been shooting 223 for a long time but never much past 200yds.

I have a 26" 1:8 twist barrel. What bullets/powders are folks shooting in 223 to get out to 600 and beyond?

Thanks

24.5 grs. of Varget with the 80 gr. Sierra MatchKing's #1480, with any good primer works fine in my 8 twist Hart out to 600 yards, the longest distance I have available.

My son also uses the same load in his 7 twist Hart to 600 yards in F-Class F/TR. Shot his way into the Master class with that load.

I'm doing the same, but with F-Class AR. My challenge is keeping COL within the magazine, meaning the Sierra MK 77gr is my go-to, as is the JLK 75gr VLD, and Berger 70gr VLD. I'd highly recommend the Hornady A-Max if you can load out beyond 2.260." With a 1:8 barrel, feel free to test the heavies, but I wouldn't expect the best results beyond 80gr, and be SURE to experiment with seating-depth (distance to lands). It can be a BIG knob after velocity.

Varget is a good powder to start with, but heavier bullets like Reloader 15 too. I've also tried AR-Comp with some good groups. My results have shown several "nodes" for velocities for each powder, Be sure to do your own testing as individual results WILL vary.

NOTE: Mag Length 2.260" is only needed for special circumstances in AR15s. F-TR should be loaded to the appropriate off the lands length, or as determined by the shooter.

Thanks. I should add that I have been getting good groups at 200 with a variety of bullets. Hornady Amax 75 gr. and 75gr BTHP. Also some 73gr Berger VLDs. An old reliable is the Sierra SMK 69gr. Varget and H4895 have been my frontrunners as powders go.

I do have a Wylde chamber on this barrel and had considered the 77s and 80s in the SMKs but never tried them. I was thinking that they should hold up a little better at the longer ranges and I have plenty of leade to use them.

Im a little confused about being Mag length. No need for that in F Class prone matches as the rule 10.1.6 is for single feed of the cartridge only.
Most AR now that have a 1:8 twist nowas days have Wylde chamber in them. With that freebore you can seat bullets out around 2.5" give or take depending on what actual freebore is on your specific chamber.

10.1.6 Loading in Slow Fire - In all slow fire events, the rifle will be loaded with only one cartridge at a time.
The cartridge shall be inserted in the magazine or chamber only when the rifle is pointed down range. Resting a
loaded rifle on a shooting stool or the foot, is prohibited. (See Rule 10.1.3).

I may have misunderstood your post, If I have i apologize.
Happy shooting.

My 1000 yard load out of my F-TR AR was 25.0gr of Varget in a Winchester case fired by a Remington 7.5 primer all launching an 80gr JLK at about 2850 out of my 26 inch Krieger. It was definitely not seated at magazine length, more like just at 2.50. There is no need to load at maglength for F-TR. I now only load 24.5 Varget with the same bullet for 300-600 yards, still at a COAL of 2.50.

The 80gr definitely should be loaded 2.5" or more, F-class AR is something we're doing locally for now:

To keep costs down and try and get more competition we're sticking to Mag length for now, since we're only shooting MR (600yards).

Well I have to aplaud your club for getting more folks out enjoying the sport. Your response ( without the link) may and I am just saying MAY confuse other new shooters about using magazine or mag length ammo in NRA F-TR.

Again good job on getting new shooters out and shooting.

Frank pretty much hit the nail on the head.

80gr with Varget, R15, AR Comp, N140 should get you something that will work well in your rifle.

Good Luck.

Fixed! No Problems now!

I just wanted to add that I was getting an MV of right around 2800fps with 24.5gr Varget, Winchester brass, 80gr JLKs and a Remington 7 1/2 primer. I seat the bullet so that the maximum diameter, the pressure band does not go below the junction of the neck and shoulder; it's just above it.
