Little cleaning rod tip- project of the week

I see people wondering what to do with their cleaning rods- traveling and using. This is a little project anybody with a pvc cutting device and a little time can do. This one was built way back by a shooter no longer with us and is what sinclair modeled their stainless one after. The parts list is this: enough 1/2” pvc to make 2 tubes long enough to leave jags and brushes installed. 2 caps, 6 tees, and 1 coupling. You can change it up however you see fit. The longer piece is for your brush rod and to distinguish between the 2 easily. This was just a scrap project built right before a match by a very good deceased friend of mine so keep the smart comments to yourself. I still use it alot and even though you can build a nicer one, so could i. The last picture shows how i clamp it onto my cleaning table at a match.

I've seen some ABRA/ARA shooters with ones made from pvc pipe. I made one a bit different by using 1.5" pvc pipe cut long enough for my longest rod, glued a cap with padding on the inside on one end, and the other cap just stuck on. Carries 3 rods in the bed of my truck all the time. I do remove the jags & brushes tho before putting in the pvc pipe.

The commercial endeavor on the left is a Mike Lucas cleaning rod caddie and in my opinion the only way to fly. I mean, I you don’t do well doing what you’re doing, at least look good doing it. I found a PCV type like the one pictured in the trash can at Dublin, Georgia at the Shamrock Shoot one year and dug it out of the trash and put up a sign “early model Mike Lucas rod caddie for sale”. Can you believe he got a little angry and destroyed it?

yea sorry it was mike lucas who did the first copy. then steve at Sinclair cheapened it up even more on the right. it was always funny to me that mike made that caddy with no provisions on how to hold the rods with his own rod guides in it, and not even long enough to leave jags and brushes on there

I made rod carries out of PVC pipe and wood holders for PVC pipe. cleaning rod holders while I’m cleaning barrels in garage.

I made my cleaning rod holders out of pvc. I used reducers and a large screw cap top that will accept the handle. I leave the tip on but the rod is suspended by the handle bottoming out on the top. If you wanted to join them it could be easily done.

This is a great idea, thanks for sharing it. I am using the Cabela's rod case presently and have my two fiberglass cleaning rods in the one case. I believe I could fit a 3rd in there if needed. Having one case to carry to and from the range is nice. I already carry too much gear back and forth.
Living on a boat, just getting to my truck is 800 paces. Packing a rifle or two, shooting mat, spotting scope and stand, range bag, ammo case, joypod in case, labradar and cleaning rods is a task unto itself.
I keep trying to figure ways to combine my equipment carriers. Since I added the Kreativ-Solutions pivoting ski feet to my Joypod and they didn't fit in the carrying case without forcing them. I now carry the Joypod in my Voodoo tactical rifle case (one of the benefits of a chassis with folding butt stock). The feet still stick out but with the straps it is secure and the feet are protected with the width of the rifle case.
When I get my shop set back up, I will have to make a PVC rack for all my cleaning rods.
Again, thanks for sharing this.

You know, in a passive setting where you aren’t transporting the rods and carriers one could mill a slot down one side of the tube slightly wider than the rod and you wouldn’t have to pull it out of the pvc the full length of the rod. The rod guide would keep it in the tube.

MTM who makes bullet cases has a Multi Rod Case for one piece rods and I have adapted the $2.00 plastic tubes with caps you can buy directly from Dewey. Have also used Snap Fishing Rod holders to hold small diameter tubes for some of my rods.

1st pic is rods stored.
2nd rods ready to use at match.
3rd clamped to table ready to use.
I made this a couple years ago and it works great with proshot rods.

I like how you incorporated fittings at the end to capture the entire rod for transport and storage. Great idea. Thanks.

I thought of buying one of those nice one from benchrite.
But I just like mine so much it’s functions great so I’ll stick with my build.
I think I have 10$ in it haha.
Ps that’s with the clamp.
