Cheap cleaning rod

I spent 4.97 before tax for a coated .17 caliber cleaning rod at a big box store. Made about 20 passes and the coating is coming off. What is wrong with the world when a 5.00 cleaning rod starts to fail after the first use.


I did buy one to clean my old .22 while I was using it I couldn't help but laugh when I caught myself going dang the coating is already coming off.....wait a second it cost 5.00 and came with a piece to use larger jags.

Was that rod coated baby blue by chance? I bought one for my 17 hmr and the coating scratches off with your finger nail. It was like 14.00(full price) and tossed it. Now I have a dewey.

Naw its black Teflon Coated so it says....Kinda crispy for Teflon lol. Hey its doing the job correctly. Wal-Mart 24 inch rod. Il test it against an Ivy lol. No kidding when I thought I was done cleaning I looked down the barrel to find a bunch of Teflon shavings in there....Ill shoot over the shavings for Teflon coated bullets

I'm with you Dusty. If you want quality, you pay for quality. If you want nothing but disposable, then do so. All said and done, if I have a barrel that is showing me all the signs of shooting way better the I ever have before and then I skimp on a minimum dollar cleaning rod? Really?????

I use the grease impregnated wooden ones. Got a couple at a yard sale back in the '50s. That hickory is something else. :

No bore guide since its a 25.00 .22LR I picked up at a garage sale....I was just being funny. On a side note the coating of unknown must be thick because I have a pile of shavings and not down to bare metal yet...

Hogpatrol....wooden cleaning rods? that sounds pretty neat brother.

Laugh, I have the .17cal. Baby blue one piece cleaning rod, it is made by Kleen Bore, so far so good. I bought it while i was waiting for my Dewey rods to come from Brownnell's.
