Keep in mind that Wikipedia is NOT a gun friendly organization, but the text is added by whomever takes the time to insert it into the site. That somebody may know absolutely nothing about the subject at hand, but just posting what their 'research' has yielded. Doesn't mean it's true, just what they found in their 'search'. Anyone can add whatever they feel is pertinent, true or not.

Case in point, my military experiences in RVN have a much different explanation/description on that site than what I actually experienced over there in regard to my outfit and what we saw in person.

My father was a pilot in WWII, and the term in question was used as to what we've all become accustomed to according to him and his friends. It may have morphed over the years, but it still means what we've all come to believe.....the belt length of .50 cal BMG ammo in the wing guns.

The term “ Ball to the wall” , “ Balls out”, depends what era u come from.

Steam engines utilized RPM governess that had large brass ball that whirled in a circle. Centrifugal force caused the balls to move outward as RPM increased and then govern the max speed of the engine.

WWII aviation, throttles, propellor controls, fuel mixtures all had balls on the top of the control levers. Pushing the levers ( balls) toward the firewall (the wall) provided max engine performance. Hence “ balls to the wall”.

love the history of the phrases we use daily.
