Lightweight Rifle Optics Opinions wanted

MQ1 said:
Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I called Talley, and they confirmed that the 2.5x8x36 Leupold would fit with their low extended lightweight rings...however there was only 5/16" of room to position the scope fore and aft.

They also confirmed that the extra low rings would not work, and there would be clearance issues with the bolt.

At this point, I am leaning towards the 30mm VX-R 3x9 with CDS. More lower end field of view than the 3x10x40, better fit than the 2.5x8x36...and better low light use with the larger tube...and the added fire dot reticle if necessary.

I've been a Burris and Nightforce guy for a long time...but I'm too poor for a March, and am interested in trying something a little different.

I have the very scope that you have decided on, except mine is a 4-12. The firedot has its purpose, however I have not used mine yet. For some reason, mine will turn on by itself from the recoil of firing the rifle. I have not contacted Leupold about that yet. You may want to look through one before ordering. With my older eyesight, I find the wide, heavy, black duplex consumes an awful lot of the sight picture. You may find it just right. After trying a wide variety of reticles over the past two years, I have settled on the regular duplex in a Leupy for hunting and a Leupy target dot for target shooting. Man the March really sounds like a great scope. With a 2-25 it would work great for me to switch between rifles for hunting in the fall/winter to my target rifle in spring/summer. I just can't stick that many $ into a scope. I'm guessing Santa would not procure one for me either! :)

My wife's 30-06 is similar to your build, with Lilja #3 and a VXlll 3.5-10 CDS. Works great but I prefer a little more magnification past 400. I have a VXlll 4.5-14 on another rifle and prefer it . Kind of a personal choice, but for the weight, it's hard to beat leupold.

Hi MQ1,Hi all

Popping in the thread just to make sure you don't disregard the Meopta Meaostar line, hoping you can have a look through one in order to actually see what I mean, they're totally awesome for the price, fantastic glass, exceptional clarity, very rugged, they're good.Check for yourself.Hope it helps.

Guys,

Again, thanks for all the good feedback. At this point, I've just ordered the Talley lightweight rings. I currently have a 4.5-14 Burris TAC30 available for working up loads, so there is still time to pursue other options...but the Burris is larger and heavier than I want, so it will be replaced once loads are developed.

The last two long shots I made hunting really made me rethink my hunting optics choice. One exactly 500 yard shot on a coyote was made on 11 power, and the other 350 yard shot on a hog was made on 4.5 power. In both cases, I did not feel that I needed more power, and the coyote actually felt awfully close. If it wasn't for the fact that I would like the lower power for hunting in brush, I think I'd likely go with a straight 6x scope like M700 suggested....sure seems to work well for him :)

If you want more fore and aft offset so the scope is positioned right for your eye than get an egw picatanny rail, which weighs very little and you will have more lattitude to position the scope of your choice.
