lighter firing pins

I've got a 700 vls in 22-250 I was wondering how much improvement the lighter firing pins provide. I see them in midway usa I was just wondering if it was another gimmick

If you're talking about a titanium firing pin, check out " The Competitive AR 15", by the very knowledgable Glen D. Zediker, page 52. "Don't use titanium. It burns. One blown primer center and you now have a very expensive, very light weight pin punch". Mr Zediker's words, not mine. ;)

Since you're talking about a Remington 700 I'll assume you're talking about something like David Tubb's light weight firing pins for bolt rifles. You might notice a difference, might not. The Remington 700 action has a reputation for a fast lock time as it is so any improvement will be marginal whereas with a typical Mauser action there's a lot to be gained in decrease in lock time because they have a longer lock time, often double that of a typical 700 action.

In rifles with hammers like the AR15 your decreases in lock time will mostly come from light weight hammers, not in the firing pin itself. I could definitely notice a difference in lightening the hammers on my AR15s.

Only way to really find out is to try it. After all, it's just money!

Unless your shooting off-hand, there's no valid reason to go to a lighter weight firing pin. It may actually cause ignition problems. If you have a "j-lock" firing pin assembly, it would help to replace the "bunched -up" spring....but not with a light-weight one.

May be a dumb question but do lighter firing pins and mechanisms help with poi jump that happens on some rifles when they are fired.

Guess, I'll try explaining it better, when dryfiring a couple rifles of mine, one in particular, through the scope I can see a 1/2" to a 3/4" jump at 200yds if I have no pressure on the gun. Would a lighter striking mechanism help this?

mshelton---- not necessarily. I had a smith put a lt. wt. pin and spring in a Rem.700 set up for LV , it was a trued Brackney action with the bolt bushed in rear. Well, the bolt handle would jump no matter if the original or lt. wt. pin and spring was used . He replaced the bolt shroud and bushed the front of the bolt in order to totally eliminate the "jump".
